State television Ert reported that a navy helicopter rescued one of the 14 crew members. Five cargo ships, three coast guard vessels, air force and navy helicopters and a navy destroyer were involved in the rescue efforts.
The Athens state news agency (ANA) quoted the coast guard as saying the ship was carrying salt and was en route from the Egyptian port of Dekheila to the Turkish city of Istanbul. The ship sank 4.5 nautical miles (8.3 km) southwest of the island of Lesbos early this morning. ANA added that the crew included two Syrians, four Indians and eight Egyptians.
According to AFP (France), ships remained anchored in some parts of Greece on November 25 despite wind speeds reaching 9-10 on the Beaufort scale, equivalent to strong gusts in a hurricane. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has raised the warning from "deteriorating weather" to "hazardous weather phenomenon" as Storm Oliver (also known as Bettina) moves from the Adriatic Sea towards Greece.
