At the recently concluded MWC Shanghai exhibition, China Mobile discussed the prospects of two new 5G services for individual customers. One is the cloud phone, launched last month. With applications, operating systems, and processing all located in the cloud, a device costing a few thousand yuan can compete with high-end phones, according to Li Bin, Vice President of China Mobile Internet.
Mr. Bin stated that cloud phones can be "tailored" to meet the needs of different user groups, such as mass consumers, gamers, streamers, etc.
The second service is a new advancement of VoNR (Voice over New Radio) on 5G networks, enhancing the voice call experience. It will integrate other applications into a phone call, such as real-time translation or remote guidance. The service is backed by the GSMA (GSMA) and two Chinese manufacturers.
According to Bian Yannan, Deputy Director of China Mobile's Planning and Construction Department, initial trials took place in June and a nationwide commercial rollout is expected by the end of the year.
According to LightReading, this is not the first time the telecommunications industry has attempted to upgrade a traditional service. More than a year ago, Chinese carriers tried 5G messaging, transforming one-way SMS messages into a multimedia service, but it was unsuccessful.
In addition to the two services mentioned above, China Mobile will focus on deploying smart base stations for its 5G private network. In 2024, the company will research and introduce emergency information services for the community, multicast data transmission, and more.
Recently, China Mobile joined the establishment of the Virtual Space Industry Alliance with 24 members, including AI video company iFlytek, Huawei, and Xiaomi. The carrier stated that its investment in virtual space will double in the next three years.
