The CBD asserts that the U.S. Department of the Interior has not yet assessed the environmental damage from old oil wells and rigs that have not been decommissioned. Old oil and gas infrastructure must be dismantled and disposed of by sealing wells and removing rigs to avoid environmental damage, according to Reuters.
As of June 2023, more than 2,700 wells and 500 drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico were overdue for decommissioning, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). There is no information yet on the response from the U.S. Department of the Interior.
