The CBD asserted that the US Department of the Interior has not examined the environmental impact of old oil wells and drilling rigs that have not been decommissioned. Old oil and gas infrastructure must be dismantled and remediated by plugging wells and removing drilling rigs to avoid environmental damage, according to Reuters.

As of June 2023, more than 2,700 wells and 500 rigs in the Gulf of Mexico are past due for decommissioning, according to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). There is no word yet on the US Department of the Interior’s response.
