Government requires unified way of recording house numbers

VnExpressVnExpress06/10/2023

The Ministry of Construction is in charge of researching and unifying solutions for managing house numbering and license plate mounting to guide localities in implementation, and the Government is directing.

According to the Resolution of the meeting on October 4, the Government assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Public Security to coordinate with the Ministry of Construction to unify the method of recording house numbers. The Ministry of Construction will review the standards for individual houses and apartments, including fire prevention and fighting issues, to overcome current shortcomings and ensure safety for people.

Since 2006, the Ministry of Construction has regulated the principle of numbering houses on the street and in the alley in order 1, 2, 3... The house on the left takes odd numbers 1, 3, 5... The house on the right takes even numbers 2, 4, 6... The direction of recording house numbers is from small to large, from north to south, east to west, northeast to southwest, southeast to northwest.

If the alley has only one end leading to the road or street, the direction of the numbering is from the side closest to the road to the end of the alley. The same applies to alleys with only one end leading to the alley.

Apartments are also numbered in natural numbers, in which the two digits tens and units record the apartment number, the two digits thousands and hundreds indicate the floor number.

If the apartment building has a central staircase, a central hallway, or no hallway, the apartments are numbered clockwise, starting with the first apartment on the left of the person going up to that floor.

If the apartment has many stairs and the hallway is arranged in the middle, choose the stair that is closest to the entrance. The numbering direction is also clockwise.

Apartment buildings with side corridors are numbered from left to right of the person standing facing the apartment building, starting with the first apartment on the left.

However, recently, house numbering in many places, especially houses in alleys in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, has not followed the rules, causing difficulties for people.

In 2014, Hanoi requested to handle the situation of chaotic house numbers, such as the same street having many houses with the same number because they belong to different wards, or a newly opened street having many house numbers with different street names.

In Ho Chi Minh City, there are also many streets with house numbers that do not follow any order or rules. For example, on Phan Xich Long Street, through wards 1, 2, 7 (Phu Nhuan District), each house has at least two numbers, two houses next to each other but several numbers apart.
