Launched this fall, the Huawei Mate 70 was advertised as “100% made in China.” However, a report from TechInsights suggests otherwise, at least from what the Canadian company discovered.
Huawei Mate 70 still depends on components outside of China?
According to the report, analysts at TechInsights have found that both the Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus models use DRAM and NAND flash memory chips manufactured by South Korea's SK Hynix, despite US sanctions that could restrict Huawei's access to these types of memory chips.
Huawei prioritizes SK Hynix memory chips on high-end models
Specifically, in the Mate 70 Pro model, the researchers found a 12 GB DRAM chip and a 512 GB NAND flash memory chip, both manufactured by SK Hynix. For the higher-end Mate 70 Pro Plus model, the device is equipped with a 16 GB DRAM chip along with a similar flash memory chip.
According to the study's authors, SK Hynix used 14nm process technology combined with EUV lithography to produce these DRAM chips. Notably, SK Hynix began shipping these types of memory in the second half of 2021, just nine months after the US export restrictions on Huawei took effect.
Although SK Hynix has denied any cooperation with Huawei during this period, TechInsights representatives said that most of the high-end smartphones released by Huawei last year used SK Hynix memory chips. Meanwhile, simpler phones used memory provided by Chinese manufacturers, such as CXMT DRAM and YMTC NAND flash memory chips. This shows that Huawei still prioritizes using SK Hynix memory chips for its high-end smartphones.
