Old market in the heart of the port city

In the heart of modern Hai Phong city, where wide open roads and high-rise buildings are increasingly numerous, there is still a familiar corner that retains the old rhythm.

Located on Hoang Minh Thao Street, adjacent to Nguyen Van Linh intersection, Hang Market (Le Chan Ward) is not only a shopping destination but also a cultural imprint of previous decades, carrying within it a rare historical depth in the midst of a youthful, dynamic urban area.

Hang Market has existed for a long time, initially just a place where people traded seeds and breeding animals for agricultural production. At that time, villagers around the area brought to the market handfuls of seeds, chicks, breeding pigs... to exchange and buy and sell. From the beginning, Hang Market gradually became a place to connect the community, a place to buy and sell not only for Hai Phong people but also for people from neighboring provinces.

What makes the Hang market unique is that it only opens once a week, on Sunday mornings. From early morning, when the streets are still sleepy, the whole street is bustling with the sound of vehicles and calls for goods. Nearly 1,000m of crowded, bustling street still retains its inherent rusticity. Buyers and sellers jostle each other, creating a bustling atmosphere reminiscent of an old country market.

Over the years, the picture of goods at Hang Market has become more and more diverse: ornamental plants, flowers, ornamental birds, ornamental fish, pets... Hobbyists can spend the whole morning just admiring a bonsai pot, a nightingale cage or a pair of starlings. Farmers still come here with bags of seeds, animal cages, necessary farming tools...

Many visitors stopped at the antique and second-hand goods area - where many items bearing the appearance of time are kept, from oil lamps, old wooden tables and chairs to old coins, adding to the richness of the market. It is this richness that has made the Hang market go beyond the concept of trading, becoming a cultural space, a place to preserve and pass on passion from one generation to the next.

Sunday mornings at Hang market are a symphony of city and countryside. The sound of vendors, car horns, birds chirping in cages… all blend together to create a vivid picture. In the hustle and bustle, people feel like they have found a quiet note of memory, as if they are reliving the atmosphere of a rural market from decades ago. That is also what makes Hang market so enduringly attractive in the heart of the port city.

In the midst of modern life, there have been some changes. Many traditional markets have gradually faded away under the pressure of supermarkets and shopping malls. But Hang Market still exists, is still bustling every week, and is still a familiar "meeting place" for locals and tourists. It is this attachment that proves that the need to return to simple, rustic roots has never disappeared.

In the midst of many changes, Hang market still stands there, as a witness, a peaceful patch of color that anyone who visits can easily find. And every Sunday morning, when the sun has not yet shone, the bustling sound of Hang market echoes, stretching along Hoang Minh Thao street like a gentle beat of time holding back travelers.
