The Ramadan market for Muslims in Saigon

VnExpressVnExpress24/03/2024

Alley 157 is home to the largest Muslim community among the 16 parishes in Ho Chi Minh City, with approximately 3,000 people. According to Mr. Haji Kim So, 73 years old, the chief imam and head of the Anwar parish administration, most of the residents in the alley are Cham people who migrated to Saigon from An Giang province in the 1960s.

Here, a small Muslim market is bustling, especially during Ramadan, the month of fasting. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar, also known as the month of abstinence. Throughout this holy month, Muslims are forbidden from eating, drinking, smoking, and even spitting out excess saliva, but this only applies during the day from sunrise. After sunset, they are allowed to break their fast and eat and drink normally.

This year, the festival began on March 11th and lasts for a month. Throughout Ramadan, residents of the alley and Muslims from other places flock here to buy Halal food (food that is permitted to be eaten according to Islamic teachings).
