Dr Zoe Williams, an American health expert, says there is an appealing strategy to improve mental health, which is playing table tennis.
“Everyday stressors – such as news, relationships, work or major life changes – can have a big impact on mental health, so it’s important to incorporate mood-boosting activities into your daily routine,” Dr Williams said. She said the social interaction and friendly competition in sports – such as table tennis – have a positive effect on mental health, helping to clear the mind and strengthen relationships with other players. “Win or lose, fun is guaranteed,” she added.
The findings come from a survey of 2,000 adults by online polling platform OnePoll. Fifty-six per cent of respondents said sport was a “stress reliever”, with 62 per cent saying that friendly competition helped them relax. And four in 10 who used sport to relieve stress said that focusing on a single task helped them forget other concerns. For 34 per cent, the real joy was in the friendly competition and satisfaction of winning. “Our research shows that playing table tennis with friends is a great stress reliever. It’s simple, fun and makes you feel great,” said Toby Harris, CEO of Bounce table tennis, which encourages people to play more.
The study also found that activities such as table tennis, axe throwing or mini golf made social events more enjoyable and engaging for 62% of participants, compared to regular dining events.
