The meeting was attended by Deputy Director Nguyen Hong Minh and representatives of the Vietnam Olympic Committee and specialized departments, demonstrating the determination in preparing for these two major sports events.
Reporting at the meeting, Head of High Performance Sports Department Hoang Quoc Vinh said that the 2025 Asian Youth Games, taking place from October 19 to 31, will be the first major and important playground of the year.
The Vietnamese Sports Delegation plans to send more than 100 members, including nearly 90 athletes, to compete in 12/24 sports and events such as: Athletics, MMA, Golf, Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Cycling, Boxing, Badminton, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Muay... The funding source for the delegation will be a combination of the state budget and socialization, aiming to both improve performance and discover young talent.
Meanwhile, the 33rd SEA Games – the largest sporting event in Southeast Asia – will take place from December 9 to 31. The Vietnamese Sports Delegation will participate with a strong force of more than 1,000 people, competing in 30 sports/disciplines. The goal is to win 80 to 100 gold medals, affirming the position of Vietnamese sports in the region.
To realize this target, the Department of Sports and Physical Training has grouped the sports to optimize training and medal strategy. Group 1 includes key sports with high potential for winning gold medals, such as: Athletics, Swimming, Football, Shooting, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Karate, Weightlifting, Fencing, Canoeing and traditional rowing, Gymnastics.
With the following sports: Boxing, Judo, Jujitsu, Petanque, Wushu, Muay, Rowing, Cycling, Chess, Archery, Pencak Silat, Table Tennis, Aerobics, Mixed Sports, Indoor Volleyball, Golf, Handball, 3x3 Basketball and Sepak Takraw.
Group 2 is the sports with the potential to win silver or bronze medals such as: Tennis, 5x5 basketball, diving, artistic gymnastics, badminton, beach volleyball, sailing, bowling, roller.
Group 3 includes socialized subjects such as: Billiards, figure skating, e-sports, baseball and softball, mixed martial arts (MMA).
Along with grouping, training programs to improve expertise, physical strength and competitive mentality have been and are being vigorously implemented. Key teams are heavily invested in all aspects, from expertise, logistics, nutrition, training equipment to medical care and injury recovery.
The teams are actively participating in tournaments and training sessions at home and abroad to increase competition, accumulate experience, and at the same time collect and analyze information about opponents to build appropriate strategies for each competition.
Head of Department Hoang Quoc Vinh emphasized that these are two key arenas of the year, so the preparation work is being pushed to a high level. The coaching staff not only trains physical strength and tactics but also focuses on analyzing and evaluating the balance of power, medal potential and investment efficiency for each athlete.
Concluding the meeting, Director Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet requested that functional departments and divisions continue to carefully review the participating forces, avoiding the situation of sending athletes who are not capable of competing. The evaluation must be substantive, closely following the competition capacity and the ability to win medals.
In addition to the elite athletes, the selection process must also take into account the next generation, creating conditions for young athletes to compete and accumulate international experience, laying the foundation for future tournaments.
Assessing that this is a challenging SEA Games, Director Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet emphasized the need to select the most elite and outstanding force for the Vietnamese Sports Delegation.
Each member of the delegation – from athletes, coaches to officials and doctors – must perform their assigned tasks well and contribute effectively to the overall results. This is not only a professional responsibility but also a national pride, meeting the expectations of millions of fans in the country.
With the spirit of urgent, scientific and methodical preparation, Vietnamese Sports is gradually perfecting the squad to participate in the two biggest sporting events in 2025.
The review not only aims to ensure professional quality but also affirms the determination to bring the best athletes to the 33rd SEA Games and the Asian Youth Games, realizing the goal of conquering new heights in the journey of developing the country's sports.
