Anti-counterfeit goods - strengthening trust, protecting people's health

In the context of the market being besieged by the problem of counterfeit, fake and poor quality goods, especially essential goods, the fight against these violations has become more urgent than ever. This is not only an economic issue, but also directly affects the health, confidence of consumers and the reputation of an economy.

Consumers' constant concerns

After 2 weeks of the peak of the fight against counterfeit goods (starting from May 15), functional forces, units and localities nationwide have inspected, detected and arrested more than 450 violations of trading, commercial fraud, counterfeit goods, tax evasion, with a total value of goods and exhibits of more than 40 billion VND. According to Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan, Chief of Office of the Ministry of Public Security , the types of activities related to counterfeit goods, banned goods, poor quality goods, and food hygiene and safety are very complicated. There are cases of very large scale, lasting for a long time with very sophisticated tricks. Counterfeit goods are produced and traded in a variety of fields. Notably, those in the fields of food, medicine, cosmetics, milk, etc. are very dangerous.

The alarming reality shows that counterfeit and poor quality goods have infiltrated every corner of life, from daily consumer goods to medical products and food. As a result, they cause great damage to legitimate businesses and raise serious concerns about public health. Using fake milk and fake medicine can cause unpredictable complications, even threatening the lives of consumers, especially the elderly, pregnant women and children. Consuming dirty food, food soaked in toxic chemicals, and vegetables with high pesticide residues are direct causes of chronic diseases, cancer, and reduced quality of life.

For people, choosing safe, quality products is an essential need but also full of difficulties. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Nhi (35 years old, a worker in Long Xuyen City) shared her worries: “Every time I go to buy milk for my child, I am always worried whether it is fake milk or not. The price is high but the quality is like “gambling”. Every time I buy vegetables from the market, I wash them many times with water and soak them in salt but I am still not assured, afraid that there are still pesticides. The health of the whole family depends on the daily food and drink, so just thinking about it makes me worried”.

Mr. Tran Van Hung (48 years old, office worker, living in Long Xuyen City) expressed his indignation: “My father has just been discharged from the hospital, I asked the doctor for advice on taking supplements to help him recover quickly. I don't care about the price, but now there are fake drugs and fake supplements of famous and reputable brands. I am so confused. If I take fake drugs or fake supplements, my father's illness can relapse and become worse. I really hope that the authorities and the State will take stronger action to eliminate these toxic things.” The concerns and worries of the people are not isolated. They are the common voice of millions of consumers who are facing risks, where trust is eroded by fraudulent acts, disregarding everything for profit.

Not only harmful to consumers, counterfeit goods and poor quality goods also deal a heavy blow to legitimate businesses when they face the risk of losing market share, reducing profits, and even being on the brink of bankruptcy due to counterfeit goods "stealing customers" and damaging their brand image. Moreover, the proliferation of counterfeit goods also reduces the motivation for innovation and creativity of businesses, hindering the development of the entire economy.

Realizing the importance and urgency of the issue, An Giang province has issued drastic instructions to step up the fight against counterfeit, fake and poor quality goods. At a recent meeting with the People's Committee of Long Xuyen City on the implementation of this work in the city, Chairman of the People's Committee of An Giang province Ho Van Mung emphasized: "The fight against counterfeit, fake and poor quality goods is a key and urgent task, requiring the synchronous and drastic participation of the entire political system and the whole society. We must consider this a fight for the health of the people, ourselves and our loved ones; for fairness in business and for the sustainable development of the province".

Implementing the direction of the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, recently, relevant departments, branches and sectors, especially the Market Management Department, Provincial Police, Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and Environment, local authorities have strengthened the inspection, examination and control of the market in a comprehensive and extensive manner, resolutely and strictly handling violations. "Absolutely do not allow the protection and cover-up of acts of producing and trading counterfeit and poor quality goods. Any violation, whether by individuals or organizations, whether small or large, must be strictly handled according to the provisions of the law, no forbidden areas, no exceptions" - Comrade Ho Van Mung directed.

Consumers focus on choosing clean, fresh food with clear origin.

In addition to strict handling, Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung requested that all levels, sectors and localities step up propaganda and dissemination of laws, raise people's awareness of the harmful effects of counterfeit and poor quality goods and provide guidance on how to identify and report violations. "Consumers are the eyes and ears of the authorities. When people have enough information, are aware of protecting themselves and proactively participate in reporting, it will be a great strength in this fight. At the same time, it is necessary to encourage and create favorable conditions for businesses to do business honestly, promote their role in producing quality products, and contribute to building a transparent and healthy market," Mr. Ho Van Mung emphasized.

The fight against counterfeit, fake and poor quality goods is a long and arduous journey. However, with the determination of all levels, the strong participation of functional agencies, the consensus of businesses and the initiative of consumers, we believe that An Giang will gradually push back this problem, build a healthy market, contribute to protecting health, strengthen people's trust and create momentum for sustainable development of the province.
