A series of offensive videos are returned when searching for a letter on Facebook.

Recently, Facebook users in Vietnam suddenly discovered a serious problem in the search engine. When clicking on the letter “b” (the letter has been changed), the results returned are all 18+, obscene and offensive videos. This phenomenon does not only appear on a small number of users.

“I accidentally discovered this problem. Worried that my account was tampered with or had some error, I asked my acquaintances. Unexpectedly, all accounts returned such terrible results,” shared Kim Yen, an office worker living in Gia Lai province.

According to Tri Thuc - Znews , this problem continued to appear on the Facebook application in Vietnam until the afternoon of October 18. Similar results were also returned when searching on Android, iOS mobile devices or web applications. At the same time, only the character "b" (changed) and a few other characters caused offensive pornographic videos to appear. Most other single letters did not have this problem. However, search results from Facebook also gave the answer that the page and video were unusual, not related to the account performing the task.

These videos have pornographic thumbnails, no overlays or special tricks to bypass the platform. Recommended videos are 18+ content of various types, from self-made short films to full-length films from professional content production websites.

In addition to the recommendation of pornographic videos, the existence of 18+ content on the platform is also a big problem. According to the community standards of the largest social network on the planet, such videos are classified as prohibited and will be deleted immediately when users post them. In some cases, the platform permanently disables the account that performs the above behavior, regardless of market or region.

Currently, the recommended videos have descriptions in English or Arabic, Indian. They open with a "fake" intro in the form of a TV report. The pornographic content is hidden behind.

This serious issue was discovered after Facebook made a major update to its search engine. This section was changed to provide Reels videos at the top of the suggestions, instead of pages, accounts or groups. The function was annoying when users could not find posts by keywords as before.

The world’s largest social network is constantly having to keep up with its rival TikTok. Reels is a feature that copies rival platforms. Suggesting this content in search results could be a move to increase its global competitiveness.
