Proactive measures to protect the power grid during the rainy and stormy season.

As the 2026 rainy and stormy season approaches, the risk of power outages remains ever-present, directly impacting people's lives and production and business activities. In light of this, power sector units in Thai Nguyen province are proactively implementing various solutions to ensure safe, continuous, and stable operation of the power transmission and distribution system, minimizing damage caused by natural disasters.

Northeast Power Transmission Company 3 (located in Quan Trieu ward) has fully prepared spare parts ahead of the 2026 rainy and stormy season.

Every year, during the rainy and stormy season, electrical incidents tend to increase compared to other times of the year. Phenomena such as trees falling onto power lines, landslides affecting pole bases, flooding of substations, or storms damaging electrical equipment not only cause localized power outages but also pose potential safety risks to the public.

Therefore, disaster prevention and control, and ensuring the safety of the power grid system, are always given special attention by the electricity sector.

Northeast Power Transmission Company 3, a unit of Power Transmission Company 1, is currently responsible for managing and operating the system of substations and 220-500kV transmission lines in four provinces: Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Bac Ninh, and Tuyen Quang, as well as two communes in Hanoi . The workload is substantial, including one 500kV substation, eleven 220kV substations, over 245km of 500kV lines, and more than 1,622km of 220kV lines.

To proactively respond to the rainy and stormy season, the unit has implemented a comprehensive set of solutions to minimize the risk of incidents. Line management teams regularly conduct on-site inspections, clear waterways in areas at risk of landslides, reinforce pole bases, inspect vulnerable locations, and develop specific response plans for each area at risk of flooding and landslides.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of Northeast 3 Power Transmission Company, said: The unit has proactively reviewed the entire system of power lines and substations; prepared sufficient materials, equipment, and personnel to be ready to handle incidents when they occur. At the same time, it has strengthened 24/7 on-call duty during the rainy and stormy season to ensure the safe and continuous operation of the power transmission grid system.

Along with the national power transmission system, the distribution grid in Thai Nguyen province is also being strengthened with safety measures ahead of the rainy and stormy season. Currently, Thai Nguyen Power Company manages and operates one 220kV substation with a total capacity of 500MVA; 40 110kV power lines with a total length of over 625km; more than 5,293km of medium-voltage power grid and over 11,114km of low-voltage power grid.

According to statistics, since the beginning of the year, numerous storms and strong winds in the province have caused damage to the power system with a total value of nearly 10 billion VND.

Given the increasingly complex and extreme weather conditions, Thai Nguyen Power Company has directed its subordinate units to strengthen inspections of power grid safety corridors, promptly address potential safety hazards, and prepare contingency plans for resolving incidents in the shortest possible time.

Mr. Ninh Van Phong, Deputy Director of Thai Nguyen Power Company, said: "We have developed specific disaster prevention and search and rescue plans for each unit; organized inspections and reviews of the entire power grid system before the rainy season. At the same time, we have prepared sufficient materials, equipment, and personnel to proactively handle incidents quickly and minimize power outage time for customers."

In rural areas, electricity service cooperatives are also making efforts to invest in upgrading the power grid system to improve the quality of electricity supply and ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season. Despite many difficulties in terms of resources, the units are proactively clearing vegetation along power line corridors, replacing dilapidated wires and poles, and strengthening the dissemination of information to people on safe electricity use.

Mr. Duong Van Luong, Director of Thuong Dinh Electricity Service Cooperative, Diem Thuy commune, shared: The cooperative has proactively inspected the entire power grid system under its management, promptly rectified unsafe locations, and deployed personnel on duty to quickly handle any incidents that arise during the rainy and stormy season.

The proactive and coordinated implementation of disaster prevention and control measures by the power sector is making a significant contribution to ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power grid during the rainy and stormy season.

However, in addition to the efforts of power companies, people also need to raise their awareness of safe electricity usage, avoid violating the power grid protection corridor, and promptly notify the power industry when they detect incidents, in order to minimize potential risks.
