Be proactive for a successful Summer-Fall 2025 crop!

After harvesting the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring (WSP) rice crop, farmers started cleaning the fields, preparing for the 2025 Summer-Autumn (SAU) crop. This crop, the weather conditions were relatively unfavorable, so to ensure a successful crop, the Long An province Department of Agriculture has synchronously implemented many solutions to improve productivity and product quality.

Proactive production

In the last winter-spring crop , although rice prices decreased compared to the same period, they were still generally quite high, achieving relatively good profits, so farmers were quite enthusiastic about producing the 2025 winter-spring rice crop. Mr. Nguyen Van Phong (Khanh Hung commune, Vinh Hung district) said that in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, he sowed 4.8 hectares of rice (ST 25 variety), with a yield of more than 8 tons/ha and sold for 8,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, he had a profit of about 40 million VND/ha. After harvesting, he immediately started cleaning the fields, preparing the soil and preparing rice seeds for the winter-spring crop. This crop, he continued to sow ST 25 variety. "The winter-spring crop usually falls during the hottest months, so I always pay attention to reinforcing the embankments and preparing the soil carefully, paying attention to water management, preventing golden apple snails and weeds" - Mr. Phong added. Similar to Mr. Phong, Mr. Dang Van Hong (Thai Tri commune, Vinh Hung district) shared: “After harvesting winter-spring rice, I started to carefully prepare for the production of the winter-spring crop, especially the land preparation and seed selection stages. This crop, I bought certified OM 18 rice seeds to sow for 5 hectares of rice.”

Farmers clean the fields to prepare for sowing Summer-Autumn rice 2025

The time of sowing the HT crop in the districts of Dong Thap Muoi region of the province falls at the peak of the hot season, often requiring the cost of pumping water, therefore, farmers are very interested in leveling the land and reinforcing the embankment system to avoid the situation of water being lost quickly from the fields. In addition, farmers in the same field also proactively join together to pump and drain water simultaneously to reduce costs, and at the same time sow concentratedly to facilitate pest and disease management and apply mechanization to serve the care, fertilization and spraying of rice. Mr. Nguyen Van Tien (Vinh Loi commune, Tan Hung district) planted 2.2 hectares of rice (high-quality rice variety OM 5451). He said: "The HT crop yield is not as good as the DX crop, but the production cost is higher due to unfavorable weather and the fields are not silted like the DX crop, so farmers often have to increase fertilization for rice". According to Mr. Tien, to reduce production costs in the 2025 winter-spring crop, in addition to doing well the steps of land preparation and water management in the fields to limit weeds and the harmful development of rats, snails and other pests, he is very interested in choosing good varieties so that the rice plants are healthy, have good resistance to pests, diseases and adverse weather conditions. Thereby, helping him reduce costs in caring for and tending rice and limit the spraying of pesticides. In addition, he also pays attention to balanced fertilization according to the growth needs of the rice plants to save money on fertilizer.

Application of drones to fertilize rice

Particularly in the southern districts, at this time, farmers are still waiting for rain to start sowing the 2025 winter-spring crop. Mr. Nguyen Van Chanh (Binh Lang commune, Tan Tru district) said: "I have proactively cleaned the fields, now I just wait for rain to plow the land and sow the winter-spring crop. This crop, I chose the OM 18 variety to sow because it is a short-term rice variety and is resistant to pests and diseases."

According to information from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, currently, a number of pests and diseases have appeared and caused damage to HT rice at the seedling, tillering, and panicle initiation stages such as golden apple snails (415ha), rats (235ha), brown planthoppers (162ha), rice blast disease (80ha), thrips (35ha), alum poisoning (10ha),... concentrated in the districts of Tan Hung, Vinh Hung, Moc Hoa, Duc Hue and Duc Hoa. In this situation, the Department recommends that farmers regularly visit the fields, prevent pests, do not overuse pesticides, limit pollution and control according to the "4 rights" principle.

To have a successful harvest

Farmers spray pesticides on rice

To help farmers produce HT rice well, the provincial Department of Agriculture and localities in the area have been actively implementing many synchronous solutions to help farmers effectively respond to adverse production conditions and make efforts to minimize costs. In particular, paying attention to supporting and guiding farmers to promote mechanization, applying scientific and technical advances in production through training sessions, field seminars at the beginning of the season and specific models to reduce production costs, improve productivity, quality and selling prices of products. At the same time, strengthening propaganda, regularly updating weather, hydrology, pests and diseases and making recommendations for farmers to proactively respond. Paying attention to maintaining and operating irrigation systems well to ensure water resources and promptly notifying favorable times for water resources, helping farmers take advantage of high tides to release water into rice fields, saving costs on pumping water, etc.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh, in order to successfully produce the 2025 winter-spring crop, the local agricultural sector and farmers need to pay attention to ensuring the isolation period between the two rice crops, creating conditions for good implementation of land preparation, straw treatment and destruction of pests and diseases in the fields. Pay attention to using biological products to decompose straw and apply advanced technical packages in production to reduce costs, such as "3 reductions, 3 increases", "1 must, 5 reductions" and smart rice cultivation adapting to climate change. In particular, it is necessary to boldly reduce seeds, sowing with the amount of seeds used about 60-80kg/ha, associated with choosing good seeds, reaching the certified level or higher, helping the rice plants to be healthy from the beginning of the season. Focus on applying precise mechanization solutions in sowing, fertilizing, and spraying rice to use materials economically and effectively, and pay attention to burying fertilizers to limit fertilizer loss and evaporation during the dry season. Focus on selecting high-quality rice varieties in the summer-autumn crop (such as OM 5451, OM 18, ...) to facilitate consumption. At the same time, sow seeds simultaneously and concentrate on each area and field to easily manage pests and diseases, and facilitate rice care and harvesting.

“Local farmers and cooperatives need to strengthen their links with each other and with businesses to proactively implement joint contracts in rice production and consumption. Thereby, it also helps facilitate the synchronous application of scientific and technical advances to improve production efficiency and limit output risks,” added Ms. Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh./.

In the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop, the whole province plans to sow 217,300 hectares. To date, 133,235 hectares have been sown, reaching 61.3% of the plan, equal to 148.4% compared to the same period in 2024. It is expected that the sowing schedule will be divided into 3 phases: Phase 1 from April 15 to 25, 2025, applied to low-lying areas without dykes; Phase 2 from May 13 to 28, 2025, applied to the whole province; Phase 3 from June 10 to June 25, 2025, applied to areas without proactive water sources and southern districts with safe dykes.
