Veteran American actor Robert De Niro will be awarded the honorary Palme d'Or at the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival scheduled to take place in the French city of the same name on May 13.
The award is a recognition of his illustrious film career and his deep commitment to one of the world's most prestigious film events over the past half century.
De Niro, 81 years old, first set foot on the Cannes red carpet in 1976 with two blockbusters, "Taxi Driver" by director Martin Scorsese and "1900" by Bernardo Bertolucci. Of these, "Taxi Driver" not only created a strong buzz upon its release but also won the Palme d'Or - the most prestigious award of the Cannes Film Festival.
Since then, De Niro has become a familiar face on the Croisette, the main venue of the Cannes Film Festival. He has returned to the red carpet of the event with blockbusters such as "The King of Comedy" (1983), Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America" (1984), and Roland Joffé's "The Mission" (1986).
In particular, the film "The Mission" was honored with the Palme d'Or, helping De Niro become one of the few actors to have appeared in two works that won the highest award at Cannes.
Although he is now the co-founder and director of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York (USA), De Niro still holds a special role at Cannes.
In 2011, he served as President of the Jury and awarded the Palme d'Or to the film "The Tree of Life" by director Terrence Malick.
In 2023, he reunited with director Scorsese at the premiere of "Killers of the Flower Moon" - an event that attracted a lot of international media./.
