President signs commutation of death penalty to life imprisonment for 18 convicts

Performing duties and powers as prescribed by the Constitution and laws, at the request of the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court, the Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme People's Procuracy and the Head of the Office of the President, on December 27, President Vo Van Thuong signed a decision to commute the death penalty to life imprisonment for 18 convicts who submitted clemency petitions to the President.

The President's commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment for convicts demonstrates the lenient and humane policy of our Party and State towards those who have committed particularly serious crimes, opening up for them a way to live, repent, reform, and have the opportunity to return to their families, communities, and society.
