Strong shaking, food and drinks... fell to the floor due to air turbulence

Images recorded by passengers and spread on social media show the plane cabin in chaos, with food scattered, tissues, plastic cups rolling on the floor, and some passengers hugging the back of their seats...

The incident occurred on Vietnam Airlines flight number VN248 on May 19. Vietnam Airlines has not yet commented on this flight.

According to many passengers on flight VN248, the plane was in the air when it suddenly shook violently as if it was being pulled down and then jumped up again. A passenger was holding a glass of water when it hit his leg, and food spilled onto the floor. The flight attendant sat hunched over in her seat, her hands gripping the edge of the seat tightly.

After stability returned, passengers were informed by the flight crew that the flight encountered strong air turbulence.

Before the incident of flight VN248, a similar incident happened to a flight of another airline on the route from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi in 2019.

The plane was preparing to land when it suddenly shook violently and had to circle for more than 30 minutes to stabilize before landing.

Some passengers described "the cabin was dead silent, no one dared to say a word, only the engine's screeching sound could be heard".

Why is seat belt important?

According to aviation experts, turbulence is a phenomenon that occurs when an aircraft passes through an area of air with sudden changes in wind speed or direction, causing strong vibrations.

Most turbulence is mild and does not affect flight safety. In the event of sudden, severe turbulence, passengers who are not wearing seat belts may be injured by impact with the cabin ceiling, seats or carry-on baggage.

Turbulence is likely to become more frequent and intense due to global climate change. Some types of turbulence are “invisible” to radar, making it difficult to predict and avoid.

According to recommendations from airlines, wearing a seat belt when flying is the most important safety principle, especially in the context of increasingly unpredictable weather changes in the air.

"The seat belt sign is off. If you do not need to leave your seat, please fasten your seat belt in case the plane enters an area of bad weather or air turbulence" - this is a familiar announcement from airlines.

According to a flight attendant, wearing a seat belt is very important. The seat belt keeps passengers in place, in case of turbulence, shaking, or free fall, passengers will not be thrown out of their seats.

Neither pilots nor air traffic controllers can observe turbulent weather on radar.

Accordingly, there are 3 levels of shaking and shaking on the plane. Level 1 is mild turbulence, the seat belt light will flash once. At this time, the flight attendant will remind passengers to return to their seats, fasten their seat belts, and limit the use of the restroom.

Level 2 turbulence requires everyone to return to their seats, but flight attendants must remind passengers before returning to their seats to fasten their seat belts.

In level 3 turbulence, the pilot will give the command "Cabin crew remained seated and fastened", meaning the flight attendants return to their seats and fasten their seat belts.

Because it is difficult to predict, it is very important to fasten your seat belt if you do not leave your seat when flying. However, in reality, some passengers still often remove their seat belts after takeoff and wait until landing to fasten them again.
