The issues that users are worried about will not occur.
Mr. Dao Cong Quyet, representative of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), affirmed that currently, most new car models from VAMA members are designed to be compatible with E10 gasoline. Businesses have also disseminated information about the use of E10 gasoline to their dealerships and customers.
Specifically, for vehicles currently on the market, the materials used in the fuel system, from the fuel tank and fuel pump to the injectors and gaskets, have been researched and selected to be alcohol-resistant. Therefore, concerns such as corrosion or aging of rubber gaskets will not occur if customers use E10 fuel in accordance with the National Standard QCVN 01:2022 of the Ministry of Science and Technology . Customers can therefore rest assured, as most modern vehicles are fully compatible with E10 fuel.
However, VAMA recommends that customers who own older vehicles should proactively have their cars inspected at authorized dealerships to receive advice and replace parts such as gaskets and fuel lines (if necessary) before switching to E10 gasoline.
Notably, according to VAMA representatives, phenomena such as sluggishness or loss of power usually only occur when the fuel's octane rating is unsuitable or the fuel is contaminated with impurities or water. Meanwhile, E10 gasoline has an octane rating equivalent to or higher than regular mineral gasoline, resulting in more stable combustion.
"If the vehicle is regularly maintained and uses standard E10 gasoline as recommended by the manufacturer, then the engine hesitation will not occur," a VAMA representative affirmed, while also recommending that customers should not leave their vehicles unused for too long, especially when the fuel tank is low. The reason is that ethanol has the property of absorbing moisture from the air, which can cause condensation in the fuel tank. In addition, users need to comply with the manufacturer's recommended fuel filter replacement schedule to ensure the fuel system remains clean.
Mr. Quyet also stated that VAMA member car manufacturers have used their distribution and dealership networks to provide information and advice to customers on car models suitable for E10 fuel, as well as models that require more thorough inspection or replacement of certain fuel system components before switching.
Specific recommendations for certain motorcycle models.
Representatives from the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM) suggest that motorcycle manufacturers should categorize their products into specific groups for recommendations. For example, most manufacturers have designed motorcycles with electronic fuel injection systems to be compatible with E10 gasoline. However, VAMM still has some points to note: Due to the cleaning properties of E10, deposits in the fuel system can clog filters or injectors. If there is difficulty starting or reduced power, customers should visit service centers for technical guidance.
Regarding vehicles using carburetor technology, a VAMM representative stated that due to different designs from various manufacturers, recommendations for using E10 gasoline will also vary, especially for older vehicle models. Therefore, the representative advised that customers using carburetor vehicles should consult with the manufacturer through customer service channels or dealerships for advice on using the appropriate fuel type.
The representative also noted that, technically, ethanol has different properties than traditional mineral gasoline, which may create some minor differences in driving feel. However, with the E10 blending ratio, these changes are generally not significant under normal usage conditions. “In 2024, VAMM collaborated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology to conduct research evaluating the impact of E10 gasoline on several motorcycle models currently in circulation. The results showed that using E10 gasoline did not affect the starting and acceleration capabilities of the vehicles under normal usage conditions,” the VAMM representative stated.
Automotive and motorcycle experts agree that when consumer habits change, apprehension and caution are normal, as consumers have the right to ask questions and debate. The most important thing is to have clear technical information and real-world experience to gradually build trust in this new fuel. At the same time, it is crucial to ensure the quality of the fuel, meeting the technical standards issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and implementing appropriate transportation, storage, and preservation methods.
