Ho Chi Minh City FC is busy renewing its core squad after a turbulent season. The Thong Nhat Stadium team has parted ways with midfielder Hoang Vinh Nguyen, who trained in Spain, and also terminated the contract with coach Phung Thanh Phuong after the end of the 2024-2025 V-League.
Hoang Vinh Nguyen was expected to help improve the attack of Ho Chi Minh City Club.
Coach Phung Thanh Phuong contributed greatly to helping the "red battleship" successfully stay in the V-League, even creating a surprise when finishing in 4th place in the V-League 2023-2024 season. However, the former player born in 1978, originally from Ho Chi Minh City football, decided not to renew his contract with Ho Chi Minh City Club.
The reason why coach Phung Thanh Phuong left the "red battleship" was because he wanted to spend more time with his family. According to new regulations of AFC, from the 2025-2026 season, coaches leading in V-League must have a Pro Coaching license.
Coach Phung Thanh Phuong made a great contribution to helping Ho Chi Minh City Club successfully stay in the V-League for two consecutive seasons.
Coach Phung Thanh Phuong missed this degree course because he spent time taking care of a sick family member. Therefore, Mr. Phuong is not qualified to continue holding the position of Head Coach of Ho Chi Minh City Club. The team's leadership invited Coach Phung Thanh Phuong to continue as an assistant coach but was unsuccessful.
"I want to spend time relaxing with my family after a long journey of stressful work. When VFF and AFC reopen the Pro class, I will register to study to update modern football trends and qualify to return to V-League. At the same time, the leadership of Ho Chi Minh City Club confirmed that they are completing the final steps to appoint a Spanish coach to replace Mr. Phuong. This important change is expected to bring a "new breeze" in the team's tactics, creating attraction for Ho Chi Minh City football fans.
