CNN, one of America's largest news publishers, removed its articles from the Apple News app over the weekend, ending its agreement to share content on the popular news app.
According to the American news site Semafor, the two companies are continuing discussions about a new agreement to restore CNN content to Apple News.
However, CNN and Apple have not yet responded to this information.
In a context where social media platforms tend to reduce the provision of links to text content in users' feeds, Apple News and its accompanying paid service, Apple News+, have become increasingly important distribution and monetization tools for news publishers.
Apple News brings millions of views and impressions each month to many media outlets, while joining Apple News+—a service that provides content from hundreds of paid publications to users for around $10 a month—has generated millions of dollars in annual revenue for news publishers.
Media outlets such as People Inc. and Condé Nast have enthusiastically embraced Apple News as a key source of revenue and readership.
However, others are cautious about becoming overly reliant on traffic and revenue from a single technology platform, fearing it might weaken their direct relationship with their audience.
According to CNN, the tough stance on Apple reflects the company's growing motivation to monetize its digital platform and its more assertive position on content sharing with tech platforms.
CNN launched a new paid subscription service earlier this month, requiring readers to pay a fee to access more of the network's in-depth articles.
