TPO - Regarding the illegally constructed villa complex of 79 in Phu Quoc, on May 22, a leader of the Phu Quoc City Party Committee, Kien Giang province, confirmed that 49 villas have been forcibly demolished and residents relocated.
| Accordingly, as of May 10th, authorities in Phu Quoc City have forcibly demolished 18 illegally constructed villas. 25 violators voluntarily rectified the situation and returned the occupied land; 6 violators rectified the situation but did not return the occupied land. In total, 49 out of 79 villas have been forcibly demolished and relocated. |
| According to observations by Tien Phong reporters on May 21st, along the main road leading to the 79-villa complex in Duong Bao hamlet, Duong To commune, Phu Quoc city, there are many long stretches of corrugated iron fences. |
On the plots of land where villas were forcibly demolished, they were surrounded by corrugated iron fences, with a sign outside that read "Construction site: corrugated iron fence for protection, land managed by the state." |
| After the villas are forcibly demolished, the authorities will remove the belongings from the site, leaving only empty plots of land. |
The internal roads within the villa complex, ranging from 6 to 8 meters in width, were demolished by authorities using heavy machinery due to illegal construction. However, some villas are still inhabited. |
As Tien Phong newspaper reported, in the Bai Truong area of Duong To commune, there are 79 illegally constructed villas located on a 18.9-hectare plot of land. This land was previously protected forest land managed by the Duong To Commune People's Committee. However, the situation has changed due to numerous organizations and individuals encroaching on, leveling, and constructing illegal residential buildings. |
On September 19, 2022, the Special Task Force of Kien Giang province, in coordination with local authorities, conducted an inspection and documented the illegal construction of the 79 villas mentioned above. Local authorities also repeatedly issued notices inviting the owners of the villas to come in for questioning to verify the origin of the land, the purchase and sale process, and the construction process. |
Previously, in response to press inquiries regarding the delay in handling these 79 villas, Mr. Huynh Quang Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City, stated that the reason for the delay was the local authorities' insufficient manpower for simultaneous enforcement. The large number of violators, residing in various locations, meant that compiling the necessary documentation for processing took a considerable amount of time. |
“We are not happy about this forced demolition, as it is the final step. However, to ensure compliance with the law and the supremacy of the law, we have to do it. Regarding the local government's responsibility, we will address our shortcomings to improve. Frankly, demolishing a house worth billions of dong is heartbreaking, but we have no choice," Mr. Hung said. The Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City hopes that the media will raise awareness among the people so they comply with the law and avoid the need for forced demolitions. |
