Because of the hot weather, I often drink iced or chilled water. Is drinking ice-cold water every day harmful to my health? (Tran Tu, 36 years old, Hanoi ).

Drinking cold water quickly quenches thirst and reduces body temperature from the inside, making us feel cooler. Some studies show that ice-cold water improves exercise performance. The optimal temperature for rehydrating after exercise is 16 degrees Celsius, which is the same temperature as cool water.

However, ice-cold water can be harmful to health if consumed too frequently. When drunk, the temperature in the throat decreases, creating favorable conditions for respiratory viruses to thrive. In particular, people with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), laryngitis, bronchitis, etc., should avoid drinking ice-cold water as it can damage the throat lining and worsen symptoms. Studies show that drinking cold water thickens nasal mucus. For those with the flu or a cold, drinking cold water can worsen nasal congestion.

Unclean ice is also one of the causes of respiratory illnesses. Bacteria and viruses in ice easily multiply and thrive in the throat, increasing the risk of throat infections. Drinking unsanitary water can also lead to harmful effects on the digestive system.

To balance quenching thirst with health benefits on hot days, it's better to drink cool water instead of ice-cold water. If using ice, make it from boiled or filtered water; if buying ice from outside, choose a reputable source that ensures hygiene and safety. People should only drink ice-cold water at certain times, such as during exercise or strenuous activity, to improve performance and rehydrate better; it shouldn't be consumed regularly. Those with respiratory illnesses should prioritize drinking room-temperature or warm water to avoid throat irritation.

Staying hydrated is also crucial on hot days to regulate body temperature and replenish fluids lost through sweating and air conditioning. The National Academy of Sciences , Engineering, and Medicine recommends that women consume approximately 2.7 liters of water per day, and men approximately 3.7 liters. This amount should come from both food and beverages. When drinking water, it's best to take small sips throughout the day rather than drinking a large amount at once.
