Billiards player Tran Quyet Chien has risen to the world number 2 ranking. |
In the semi-finals, Quyet Chien played impressively and consistently led against Dick Jaspers - the world number one. However, in the last three innings, he failed to score any points, allowing his Dutch opponent to come back and win 50-48 after 30 innings.
On his way to the semi-finals, Quyet Chien defeated his compatriot Nguyen Dinh Quoc 50-18 in the round of 16, then beat Kim Haeng-jik 50-27 in the quarter-finals. He also made his mark with a 40-14 victory over Choi Wang-young in the group stage in just 10 innings – the highest score in the tournament.
In the final, Jaspers then defeated Heo Jung-han 50-33 to win his 32nd World Cup title, with an average of 2,302 points – the highest by a champion since 2023.
Despite not reaching the final, the bronze medal helped Quyet Chien climb two places, returning to the world number two position, behind only Jaspers. Besides Quyet Chien, all the other home players were eliminated in the round of 16.
The 3-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup, taking place from May 19th to 25th in Ho Chi Minh City, is the second leg of the 2025 World Cup series. The tournament features 149 players, including many of the world's top superstars.
The tournament champion receives 16,000 euros (approximately 470 million VND) and 80 bonus points. The runner-up receives 10,000 euros and 54 bonus points. The third-place winners receive 6,000 euros and 36 bonus points each.
The next leg of the World Cup will take place in Ankara, Türkiye from June 9th to 15th.
