The eldest son has filed to drop the Brad Pitt surname.

TPO - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's eldest son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, has filed a request to drop his adoptive father's surname.

The Daily Mail reported that Maddox (born in 2001) legally requested on May 28th that "Pitt" be removed from his last name, changing it to Maddox Chivan Jolie. In the application, the eldest son did not elaborate on his decision, only stating "personal reasons".

Earlier in February, Maddox unofficially disowned his father by using the name Maddox Jolie in the end credits of the Couture film starring Angelina Jolie.

The British newspaper described this as a "painful blow" to Brad Pitt, as an increasing number of his children have publicly dropped his surname from their names.

Before Maddox, Shiloh was the first child to publicly file a petition to drop her father's surname on her 18th birthday (May 27, 2024). This request was approved by a judge in Los Angeles, USA, on August 19, 2024. The young dancer's name was changed from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.

At the time, Shiloh's lawyer, Peter Levine, told People that the decision was made independently following the traumatic events. According to her legal representative, Shiloh did not want to publicly announce the last name change, but had to comply with California law.

Besides Maddox and Shiloh, Zahara and Vivienne have also publicly denied any relationship with the F1 star.

At the Spelman College graduation ceremony on May 17th, the adopted daughter of Ethiopian origin was announced as Zahara Marley Jolie, instead of the Jolie-Pitt combination.

Zahara first publicly acknowledged her father in late 2023, during the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority induction ceremony. At the time, she caused a stir in the global media by loudly proclaiming her name without the word "Pitt".

Similarly, in May 2024, Angelina and Brad's youngest daughter attracted attention when she was introduced as Vivienne Jolie in the credits for The Outsiders – a play produced by Angelina Jolie. Vivienne works as her mother's assistant.

Pax Thien has criticized Brad Pitt on social media, but there is no evidence to suggest that the Vietnamese-American has dropped his father's surname. Meanwhile, Knox is the only child who has never expressed any feelings of love or hate towards his famous father.

Representatives for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have not commented on Maddox's application to change his name.

Angelina Jolie adopted Maddox from an orphanage in Cambodia in 2002. Brad Pitt only officially changed his relationship with Maddox to a father-son relationship after he began dating the actress born in 1975.

In the lawsuit Angelina initiated against the FBI in 2022 – after the agency concluded Brad Pitt was innocent of domestic violence charges in 2016 – the actress claimed her ex-husband had a fight with Maddox on a plane and poured beer on her.

Angelina accused Brad of "physical and verbal assault" against her and their children during a private flight from Europe to the US in 2016. According to the Maleficent star, her ex-husband attacked Maddox when their son tried to protect her.

Brad Pitt denies the allegations. The FBI agrees with him. Federal investigators have stated that the actor did not engage in any wrongdoing.

Since then, the relationship between Brad Pitt and Maddox is said to have become distant. European and American media reports that Brad has not been in contact with Maddox and Pax Thien since his divorce from Angelina.

This process makes Maddox's request to drop his father's surname less surprising. However, this idea doesn't seem to have originated then, but rather emerged more recently. Evidence of this is that in the introduction to Maria – a film starring Jolie as the late opera singer Maria Callas – released in 2024, Maddox still retains the Jolie-Pitt surname under the "assistant producer" section.
