The U Minh Ha Forestry Company Limited currently manages over 24,000 hectares of forest, including areas leased to local people. Given the extreme weather conditions, many areas have entered a peak fire risk period. The company has implemented comprehensive solutions such as water and freshwater conservation, strengthening infrastructure, and intensifying public awareness campaigns to encourage people to participate in forest fire prevention and control.
Local residents in the forest area managed by U Minh Ha Forestry Company Limited always station personnel at watchtowers to protect the forest during the dry season.
Mr. Do Van Dong, Deputy Director of U Minh Ha Forestry One-Member Limited Company, said: “We have implemented engineering solutions to retain water and freshwater for production and firefighting; at the same time, we have intensified propaganda and organized the signing of commitments with more than 2,700 households in the forest area. Equipment and vehicles have also been strengthened to ensure they meet the requirements of fire prevention and control.”
The entire province currently has approximately 45,800 hectares of forest at high risk of fire, with a significant proportion managed by local people. Under these circumstances, proactive measures based on the "4 on-site" and "5 readiness" principles from the community are considered key factors in reducing the risk and damage caused by forest fires.
In the U Minh I sub-district, the fire prevention and control force is also well-organized. Mr. Nguyen Duy Phuong, Head of the U Minh I sub-district, said: “The fire prevention and control teams are regularly maintained with a force of 5-6 people/team, always in a state of readiness. When a warning signal is received, the force is quickly mobilized to control the fire from the very beginning.”
In reality, monitoring from watchtowers to the seamless coordination between the people and the authorities has created a solid "defense system" for protecting the forests. When each citizen raises their awareness and takes action, the forests will have an additional "shield" to safely overcome the harsh dry season.
