Neon – Controversial Social App Ranks 2nd on the App Store
A social app that has risen to No. 2 in the free app rankings on the U.S. App Store, Neon is paying users to record calls and sell that audio data to AI companies.
Neon users can earn 30 cents per minute, up to $30 per day and can even go up to hundreds to thousands of dollars per year.

While Neon claims to only record one side of the recording to avoid violating wiretapping laws, legal experts warn that voice data could be used to create fake voices or commit fraud. Additionally, Neon does not publicly list its AI partners or how it uses the data.
Neon is run by Alex Kiam from an apartment in New York. The startup has received investment from Upfront Ventures, but neither the founder nor the investor responded to TechCrunch's request for comment.
As AI becomes more prevalent, many people are willing to trade privacy for money. However, this can affect both users and those they communicate with, raising big questions about ethics and data security.
