The Hanoi -Hai Phong-Quang Ninh "triangle" has created a dynamic growth pole in the North of the country. On its journey to becoming the fourth growth pole, Thanh Hoa's processing and manufacturing industry has affirmed its position as a driving force and is opening up many expectations for the future!

The pillar of the economy

In Thanh Hoa's GRDP growth of 12.16% in 2024, the industrial sector contributed 7.37 percentage points. This achievement is due to the efficient production activities and wide-open consumer markets of many key factories in the manufacturing sector - a sector that accounts for nearly 90% of the total value added of the entire industrial sector.

Following a successful major maintenance overhaul at the end of 2023, the Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant has been operating at a capacity exceeding its design capacity by up to 20%. (General Director of Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited)

Kazutaka Yamato stated: “Based on four solutions: innovation in management; improvement of production and operational efficiency; restructuring of financial operations; and enhancement of commercial and business performance, the plant has operated stably and safely, with petroleum production meeting 40% of domestic market demand and successfully exporting six petrochemical products to the world.”

Also in 2024, Thanh Hoa's processing and manufacturing industry demonstrated its capabilities with the success of many projects and contracts requiring complex technical expertise and high levels of specialization.

At PTSC Thanh Hoa Petroleum Technical Services Joint Stock Company (PTSC Thanh Hoa), following its success as one of the five main contractors for the maintenance of the Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant at the end of 2023, including high-tech equipment such as boilers, turbine generators, high-pressure operating pipelines, control valve systems, heat exchangers, and electrical control equipment, PTSC Thanh Hoa completed the handover of a package of 30 wind turbine foundations, with a total weight of 9,000 tons, for the offshore wind turbine foundation fabrication and supply project of the CHW2204 project in Taiwan in August 2024.

According to PTSC Thanh Hoa, to implement the project with design, production, and acceptance testing according to strict international procedures and standards, PTSC Thanh Hoa has made what could be called a "record" amount of preparation in terms of investment in machinery, equipment, and infrastructure serving the project. This includes the investment in 7.7 hectares of construction yard; the upgrading of 4,500 square meters of workshop; 9 bridge and shelter systems for construction... The company mobilized a workforce of up to 300 experts, engineers, and skilled workers, with 700,000 working hours and successfully and safely carried out more than 420 large lifting and lowering operations.

“The success of the CHW2204 project is considered a key to unlocking and marking a very important milestone in turning PTSC Thanh Hoa's plans into reality in the near future. That is to become a technical service center connected to the seaport serving the offshore oil and gas and renewable energy industries,” shared Pham Hung Phuong, Director of PTSC Thanh Hoa.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in 2024, many processed and manufactured industrial products continued to affirm their leading position in economic growth and budget contributions, such as: Electricity production increased by 18.8%; cement increased by 7.6%; gasoline increased by 31.5%; diesel increased by 37.4%; paraffin wax increased by 75.9%; benzene increased by 55.8%; solid sulfur increased by 30.7%; sports shoes increased by 27%; ready-made clothing increased by 19.1%; steel increased by 16.9%...

This is also the driving force behind the industrial production index (IIP) reaching a growth rate of 19.25% in 2024. In particular, the proportion of the processing and manufacturing industry has continuously increased; from 81.5% in 2015 to 87.6% in 2020, and is projected to reach 92.1% in 2030. This confirms the steady development of products with high technological and scientific content in Thanh Hoa's industrial sector.

Expectations for the future

In 2024, along with consolidating its position and production capacity of traditional products such as gasoline, oil, cement, garments, and leather shoes, Thanh Hoa welcomed a new line of garment accessories from the SAB Vietnam Industrial Park in Bim Son Industrial Park – meeting the urgent demand for auxiliary materials for the garment industry. The Le Gia Seafood Canned Food Factory (Hoang Hoa district), with its green production standards, was also inaugurated, transforming Thanh Hoa's humble raw materials into high-value export goods...

From the beginning of 2025, the province's industrial sector will welcome modern, high-value-added technological products. These include new steel products using the state-of-the-art DANIELI steel technology from Italy, produced by Nghi Son Steel Mill No. 2; Radial automobile tires from COFO Tire Vietnam Co., Ltd.; and metal components, mechanical processing, and installation of industrial machinery and equipment... supplying key national and international projects ranging from petrochemicals, heavy industry, thermal power plants to high-rise buildings, prefabricated steel structures, and public infrastructure, produced by Nghi Son High-Tech Mechanical Engineering Plant.

Along with 46 industrial projects approved in principle last year, with registered capital of VND 11,730 billion and USD 242.2 million, Thanh Hoa is expected to attract large, key industrial projects in 2025. In particular, industrial park infrastructure construction and operation projects such as Phu Quy (with a total investment of USD 55 million), Giang Quang Thinh (with a total investment of USD 53 million), and the Western Thanh Hoa City Industrial Park (with a total investment of USD 122 million) are expected to be fertile ground for many high-quality secondary investment projects in the processing and manufacturing sector.

Hundreds of industrial "machines" are still operating day and night. Nghi Son Port is bustling with ships carrying cooking oil, steel, cement, packaging... for consumption throughout the country. Many high-tech projects, in line with the province's development trends and investment attraction orientation, such as gas-fired and wind power, are also attracting the attention of many multinational corporations such as JERA Co. Inc (Japan); GEO (Federal Republic of Germany); KOSPO, Daewoo E&C (Korea); Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited (Thailand)... These will make Thanh Hoa one of the major centers in the region and the country for heavy industry, energy industry, processing, and manufacturing in the near future.
