According to the global COVID-19 report that Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper received from WHO on the morning of May 12, the Western Pacific - the epidemiological region that the organization classified Vietnam in - leads in the number of new cases with more than 975,000 cases, an increase of 35% compared to the previous cycle.
The increase was mainly due to the increase in the Pacific Rim countries, which have just "reversed" the decline cycle a few weeks ago. 30% of the countries in this region reported a strong increase of over 20%, with the highest in Vietnam, Mongolia and Laos.

Meanwhile, the three countries with the highest number of cases are South Korea (361,691 cases), Japan (262,145 cases) and Australia (114,460 cases). These are also the three countries with the highest number of deaths. However, overall, with 1,387 new deaths for the whole region, the trend of sharp decline in deaths continues (down 33%).
Vietnam reported 46,230 cases in 28 days, an increase of 6,862%, but this huge increase is mainly due to the previous 28-day period reporting only 664 cases.
Europe and the Americas reported more than 800,000 and more than 647,000 new COVID-19 cases, respectively, down 38% and 35% from the previous cycle. However, these two regions had high death tolls, with 6,345 and 7,483, respectively.
Southeast Asia reported a limited number of cases compared to the overall increase, possibly due to lower testing coverage than other regions: 258,500 new cases, an increase of 223%. This epidemiological area includes South Asia and parts of Southeast Asia geographically.
91% of countries in the Southeast Asia epidemiological region reported an increase of over 20%, the highest being Myanmar (increase of 1,252%) and Thailand (increase of 659%).
The three countries with the most cases are India (up 222%), Indonesia (up 199%), and Thailand, which are also the three countries with the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in the region. However, Thailand has only had 27 deaths; while India and Indonesia account for most of the deaths in this epicenter, with 715 and 407 cases, respectively.
The remaining two epidemiological regions, the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa, have reported limited cases. Of these, the Eastern Mediterranean, which includes geographical West Asia, an area with a previous surge in cases, is showing a "cooling" trend.
