At the ASEAN Vietnam 2025 sharing session with the topic of Cyber Security in Vietnam that just took place, Mr. Le Tran Hai Minh, Deputy Head of Information Security Policy Department, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam ( Vietcombank ) warned about this.
Experts share on cybersecurity, information and data protection
To protect their accounts, Vietcombank experts recommend that people limit receiving strange messages, invitations or offers to earn money or transfer money.
In particular, do not provide information related to your account, password, or account security code to anyone you contact, including relatives.
Notably, when relatives and friends text to borrow money, we need to call via phone number to verify instead of using video calls via social networks.
"Vietcombank has a testing department and is sure that video calls on social networks can still be hacked. Accordingly, the attacker uses photos, then uses AI to create a video response and inserts it directly into the phone. When a call comes in, instead of turning on the video, the video is posted and displayed on the caller's screen. It is very difficult for us to distinguish whether it is a real person's face or a posted video" - Mr. Minh warned.
On the business side, Mr. Minh noted that people are always the weakest link in the information security system. Businesses need to train staff on information and data security skills, including janitors and security guards.
"Attackers often do not go through the "main door" but often go through the "chimney", so branches also need to pay attention to information security" - Mr. Minh said.
In 2024 and early 2025, the cybersecurity situation in Vietnam will become more complicated with many threats increasing in both quantity and sophistication.
According to Viettel Cyber Security's report, in 2024, more than 121 million personal account records were leaked (an increase of 15.78% compared to 2023), 924 thousand distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks with a scale exceeding 1 Tbps for the first time, and ransomware attacks demanding ransoms of up to 11 million USD.
Notably, the number of fake brand pages increased nearly 3 times, focusing on the finance and banking sector and shifting to impersonating public service agencies.
According to the National Cyber Security Monitoring Center (NCSC) published in January 2025, 784,180 weaknesses/vulnerabilities were detected in information systems of state agencies and organizations.
According to Mr. Tran Minh Quan, Senior Manager, Information Security Services, PwC Vietnam, the National Assembly has just passed the Law on Personal Data Protection, expected to take effect from January 1, 2026. Before that, businesses had 2 years to implement Decree 12/2023 of the Government on personal data protection. Therefore, businesses need to focus on resources through training to ensure data protection and information security awareness.
