Surrounded by the Co Chien River, An Binh commune has many advantages in terms of climate, hydrology and soil. In recent years, the island commune has exploited its strengths to develop modern aquaculture.
Applying digital transformation, building aquaculture areas according to VietGAP standards and promoting production linkages are opening up a sustainable direction, not only creating income for people but also contributing to the development of eco-tourism associated with agriculture .
An Binh Islet has the strength to raise aquatic products: tra fish, tilapia, snakehead fish, carp... to serve the domestic market and export. |
High technology applications in production
An Binh commune currently has an area of over 60km², surrounded by a dense river system, with fresh water all year round, favorable for developing cage aquaculture. According to Mr. Ho The Nhu - Vice Chairman of An Binh commune People's Committee, the whole commune currently has about 160ha of aquaculture with 1,671 cages, mainly concentrated on Tien river and Co Chien river. Diverse farmed products include pangasius, red tilapia, snakehead fish, carp... serving the domestic market and export.
“We have identified a sustainable direction to promote the application of high technology in farming. In addition to supporting breeds and technical processes, the locality also coordinates to build digital maps of farming areas and integrates production data into mobile phone applications. Each household participating in the cooperative has an electronic diary updating the stocking schedule, feed quantity, harvest time, ensuring traceability of origin”-
Mr. Nhu said.
Currently, the commune has 5 export seafood companies, 2 typical cooperatives are Vinh Long Safe Seafood Chain Link Cooperative (Binh Luong Hamlet) and Dong Phu Seafood Cooperative (Phu Thuan 2 Hamlet). In addition, 4 typical seafood products of the commune have been certified OCOP including: dried eel, dried pineapple fish, boneless he fish, high-quality dried red tilapia.
Applying the farming process according to VietGAP standards, Mr. Pham Hung Dung - Director of Vinh Long Safe Food Chain Cooperative (An Binh commune) said: The cooperative has been granted a certificate of qualified food safety facility, a certificate of eligibility to participate in the "safe food chain".
The cooperative currently has over 100 cages with a total area of 8,000m2. In addition to red tilapia, the cooperative also raises a variety of fish such as: giant barb, toadfish, catfish, catfish, giant catfish, he fish, pearl fish, tilapia, carp, crispy carp, grass carp, catfish, snakehead fish, basa fish, etc.
The main consumption markets of the cooperative are markets, supermarket systems, selling to export processing factories and restaurant systems. The cooperative members all focus on ensuring clean production standards, focusing on strict control from the stage of importing breeds to the process of caring for and raising safe, high-quality fish. Thanks to that, the fish grow healthily, the products sold on the market are popular and trusted by customers.
At TS Dong Phu Cooperative, a significant step forward is the implementation of online farming diary software and AI virtual assistant developed by An Binh AIT Company. According to Mr. Vo Thanh Quang - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of the Cooperative, all 70 cages of the unit have achieved VietGAP certification, with output in the first 6 months of the year reaching more than 121 tons of red tilapia, grass carp and common carp.
“The application of AI software helps us closely monitor the water environment, control the farming process, and adjust the amount of food appropriately, thereby increasing the survival rate and reducing production costs. This is the foundation for us to build a preliminary processing plant, gradually closing the production, processing, and consumption chain. At the same time, the cooperative also proactively distributes quality breeds, medicines, and TS products to members, and organizes periodic seminars and technical training,” said Mr. Quang.

Exploiting tourism and seafood potential
With the goal of developing a multi-pillar economy, the An Binh commune government aims to combine agricultural production with community tourism. An Binh is a famous eco-tourism area of the province with more than 4,000 hectares of fruit gardens, homestay systems, craft villages, historical relics and garden check-in points. According to statistics, in the period of 2020-2025, the whole area welcomed nearly 933,000 visitors, with tourism revenue of more than 364 billion VND.
“With great potential for tourism development, we are encouraging households and cooperatives to expand experiential tourism such as visiting fish farms, feeding fish, learning about VietGAP farming processes, processing dried fish... This is a way to increase product value and introduce local specialties to tourists in a visual and vivid way,” Mr. Nhu added.
According to Mr. Nhu, the commune currently has 18 homestays, of which 9 have won the ASEAN Homestay award; 8 fruit gardens open all year round; 2 craft villages and many relics such as Tien Chau pagoda, Phuoc Dinh communal house... These are ideal conditions for the high-tech TS farming model to not only serve consumption, but also become part of a unique agricultural tourism product.
Moving forward, to expand the scale, the locality still needs more support in terms of capital, infrastructure and support policies. Currently, many private fish farmers are still hesitant to reinvest due to unstable prices and high input costs.
The commune government is aiming to provide capital support according to Resolution No. 68 of the Politburo on private economic development; strengthen consumption connections through the province's agricultural product trading floor, and organize additional technical transfer classes and instructions on the use of medicines and feed according to regulations to improve product quality.
It can be seen that TS farming in An Binh commune is gradually shifting towards professional production, applying high technology and linking in chains. These steps not only contribute to improving economic efficiency but also open up the potential to combine with eco-tourism, creating more value for the island.
