Palmer continues his extended absence from competition. |
Palmer left the pitch after just 20 minutes in the 1-2 defeat against Manchester United on September 20th, and manager Enzo Maresca had hoped he would return in November. However, in his latest statement ahead of the away game at Nottingham Forest on October 18th, Maresca admitted: "I was wrong. Unfortunately, he will be out for another six weeks."
The Italian coach also emphasized that Palmer does not yet need surgery: "We are just trying to protect Palmer as much as possible. The medical team is not magic. We hope six weeks is enough, but we will monitor him step by step, week by week. Palmer currently looks very good, relaxed and working hard to recover."
A six-week absence means Palmer will miss nine crucial Chelsea games, including clashes against Tottenham and Barcelona. If all goes well, he could return for the match against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on November 30th.
Palmer's injury also kept him out of the England squad in November, missing the matches against Serbia and Albania. Coach Thomas Tuchel admitted he was concerned Palmer's groin condition could become chronic.
Besides Palmer, Chelsea are also grappling with other injuries. Centre-back Benoit Badiashile will be out until December due to a muscle problem, while Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Pedro Neto have yet to train and are likely to miss the match against Nottingham Forest.
Chelsea are facing a serious personnel challenge as key players are repeatedly experiencing problems, and the season is about to enter its most crucial phase.
