Less than 10 days until New Year 2024, which is also the opening day of the Sa Dec Flower and Ornamental Festival (Sa Dec City, Dong Thap ). All the flower fields in this city are filled with a bustling atmosphere, and the flower beds are also competing to show off their colors.

In addition to the traditional yellow chrysanthemum, this year many farmers in Sa Dec have for the first time grown foreign varieties of five-color chrysanthemum for commercial sale. New varieties of chrysanthemum from the Netherlands and Korea with a variety of red, pink, orange, purple colors... make the city's flower fields more brilliant.
Garden house increased capacity 5 times
The flower and ornamental plant cooperative in Tan An hamlet, An Hoa ward, this year planted more than 230,000 pots of various flowers, an increase of more than 3 times compared to previous years. The garden with 10,000 pots of new varieties of raspberry chrysanthemums of the cooperative is becoming the center of the city, welcoming more than 100 groups of visitors every day.
Gardeners say that the care process for foreign chrysanthemums is quite similar to that of traditional flowers. However, while most traditional Tet flowers cost VND50,000-80,000/pot, the new chrysanthemums, even though they cost up to VND200,000/pot, are still the preferred choice of customers.
"Never before have I grown flowers and sold them at such a good price and early like this year. I am extremely excited," said Mr. Dang Quang Giau (living in An Hoa ward).

Mr. Giau said that this year his family planted 70,000 flower pots, 5 times more than every year. The main flower varieties are chrysanthemums, roses, marigolds, etc.
After many years of technical testing, this Tet, Mr. Giau decided to plant 5,000 pots of the new variety of chrysanthemum, all of which have been ordered. "There are so many people ordering, even if I had 10,000 more pots, I'm afraid it still wouldn't be enough to sell," Mr. Giau added with a smile.
Not only Mr. Giau, all 11 flower growers in the Flower Cooperative in An Hoa Ward have "sold out" their products. Some people even increased their capacity tenfold compared to last year and have now sold out.
"The income during Tet usually accounts for half of the annual income of flower growers. This year, flower growers in Sa Dec have two Tets, and the income during the Solar New Year is better than the Lunar New Year, so everyone is happy.
I don't dare say if I will earn billions this Tet, but I'm very happy, I will probably earn 700-800 million VND in profit. Because I planted a lot this year, I hired 10 people to help," Mr. Giau added.
Also growing flowers in An Hoa ward, Mr. Tran Thanh Lam expects this year's profit to double that of last year. Growing 20,000 flower pots, mainly roses, Mr. Lam estimates that this Tet he will earn over 180 million VND.
"This batch of flowers has been ordered. If they are sold out, I will get short-term seedlings to plant, still in time for the traditional Tet holiday," said Mr. Lam.

Mr. Pham Thanh Tam (residing in Tan Quy Dong ward) said that in order to make the most of the festival, he has invested an additional 200 million VND to renovate his rose garden into a flower market space. Along with a series of miniature landscapes that have been built in advance, Mr. Tam believes that he will have a high income and leave a good impression on visitors.
"I sell flowers, and also the love of flower sellers" is the theme of Mr. Tam's flower garden during this year's festival season.
Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc, the owner of a bonsai garden in Tan Khanh Dong commune, has also hired more workers to clean up the garden in time for the festival. Mr. Loc is one of the most famous artisans in Sa Dec, owning many bonsai works that have set Vietnamese records.
"We have been waiting for this festival for 10 years. Everyone is happy and ready to contribute their efforts and money to beautify the city. Our ornamental plant association has asked the city for permission to spend billions of dong to build a flower river for visitors," said Mr. Loc.
Sa Dec will be the city of flowers
Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee said that the first Sa Dec Flower and Ornamental Festival with the theme "Love of the Land - Love of Flowers" will take place from December 30, 2023 to January 5, 2024. The event has nearly 20 programs such as flower spaces, flower streets, flower markets, art shows on the river... promising to bring unforgettable experiences to visitors.
Mr. Huynh Minh Tuan - Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee said that the province has a resolution to build Sa Dec into the most unique flower city in the West.
Ms. Vo Thi Binh, Vice Chairwoman of Sa Dec City People's Committee, said that to contribute to the preparation for the festival, the locality has invested 140 billion VND to renovate and upgrade Sa Dec City Square. Sa Dec Flower Park adjacent to the square is also being upgraded to create a flower space of more than 23 hectares.
In addition, the roads and many rivers in Sa Dec City will also be decorated. More than 200,000 flower baskets will be mobilized to decorate for the Festival. The locality will also organize special culinary programs, flower fashion ... throughout the festival.
Sa Dec has about 200 hectares of roses with nearly 100 different varieties, this is the typical flower of the city (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
According to Ms. Binh, the flower growing profession in Sa Dec has a history of over 300 years. This year, Sa Dec City has 950 hectares of land for growing ornamental flowers, an increase of more than 220 hectares compared to 2022.
Sa Dec farmers are growing more than 2,000 varieties of flowers, including nearly 100 varieties of roses. More than 4,000 households participate in ornamental flower production, accounting for half of the total number of households in the city. The flower industry earns over VND3,200 billion each year.
Flower gardens not only bring income from selling products, tourism services have helped many farmers become rich.
"The city organizes the flower festival based on the wishes of the people. The event aims to honor flower growers, connect trade, and stimulate tourism. It is expected that the budget will only contribute about 30% of the organization costs, about 70% of the costs will be mobilized from socialized sources," said Ms. Binh.
