Often known as the home of Santa Claus and boasting landscapes reminiscent of the fantastical world of The Chronicles of Narnia , Finland's Lapland region is inviting visitors to switch from familiar reindeer rides to a summer-long gold rush .
Participants will explore trails and landmarks in Levi, a resort in northern Finland known for its winter ski slopes and aurora borealis views. Here, fortune seekers will search for a gold bar worth 20,000 euros (approximately $23,300).
According to an announcement by the Visit Levi tourism organization on June 2nd, the Midnight Sun Hunt competition will begin on June 18th at the Levi Visitor Center.
Participants can receive initial information and register for the competition at this center. Subsequent information will then be released sequentially, guiding players through trails, attractions, and local landmarks, each step bringing them closer to the hidden treasure.
The organizers stated that the gold bar could be found as soon as any information is provided. However, additional clues will continue to be released throughout the summer, making the treasure's location easier to pinpoint over time.
The final tracking information is expected to be revealed on August 22nd.
The Visit Levi tourism organization describes summer in Levi as a "hidden gem" waiting to be discovered by visitors.
“Levi is primarily known as a winter destination, but summer in this far northern region is still considered a novelty for many visitors,” said Satu Pesonen, CEO of Visit Levi, in a press release.
"We want to give visitors a new reason to come to Levi at a time when the sun never sets and the hilly landscape reveals a completely different beauty," emphasized Satu Pesonen.
The Levi ski resort is one of many popular winter destinations in Europe that has diversified its tourist activities to attract visitors year-round, notably offering experiences that don't require snow, such as paragliding, hiking, whitewater rafting, and mountain biking.
The Midnight Sun Hunt treasure hunt was organized in collaboration with Agnico Eagle Finland, a gold mining company based in Kittilä, and Levi Ski Resort.
The organizers require participants to move responsibly, only operate in permitted areas, and respect the natural environment. The treasure hunt does not require players to dig or disturb the terrain in any way.
Located above the Arctic Circle, Levi is renowned as one of Finland's top ski destinations and a popular winter destination in Europe. Locals hope the new treasure hunt will help promote Levi as an attractive year-round destination.
