Hanoi Moi Newspaper has officially launched a writing contest: “Celebrating 70 Years of the Liberation of the Capital: Proud Memories” on the Hanoi Moi online newspaper and the Hanoi Moi Weekend publication.

For many years, Hanoi – a land of thousand-year-old culture – has been a familiar subject for literary, musical , and artistic creations in general. However, with the writing competition launched by Hanoi Moi Newspaper , the themes will be narrowed down to the period around 1954.

The competition aims to widely disseminate among cadres, Party members, and all strata of the people the importance and historical significance of the Liberation Day of Hanoi, the glorious revolutionary struggle tradition, and the great contributions of the Party Committee, armed forces, and people of Hanoi in the cause of national liberation, building and protecting the Fatherland; to promote and educate on the moral principle of "drinking water, remembering the source"; the thousand-year tradition of Thang Long - Hanoi associated with the 25th anniversary of Hanoi being honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a "City for Peace "; contributing to arousing love and aspirations for the development of the Capital City as a "Cultural - Civilized - Modern" city; and to promote the image and culture of the Capital City to localities throughout the country and international friends.

The competition is a meaningful activity contributing to the city's overall celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi, a practical commemoration of the 67th anniversary of the first issue of the daily Hanoi New Newspaper (October 24, 1957 - October 24, 2024), and at the same time continuing to contribute to the innovation and improvement of the quality of the newspaper's publications, and strengthening the promotion of the brand of the Party newspaper of the Capital.

The Hanoi New Newspaper identifies this as an opportunity to widely publicize and promote the traditions, culture, and history of Thang Long - Hanoi, especially the economic, cultural, and social achievements of the capital city during its seven decades of development.

The entries should be memoirs, recollections, and documents about historical events or figures related to the victory at Dien Bien Phu and the period of taking over the capital (October 1954); reflecting the atmosphere of social life in Hanoi in the post-liberation period and the period of socialist construction…

The subjects of these works can also be exemplary individuals, labor heroes, and outstanding citizens of the capital city who have made significant contributions to the city; initiatives and proposals aimed at building and developing the capital in the direction of "Cultural - Civilized - Modern".

Speaking at the launch ceremony, journalist Nguyen Minh Duc, Editor-in-Chief of Hanoi Moi Newspaper, said: “I express my hope that writers will pay attention to the city's developments so that they can write insightful and persuasive articles about an 'extraordinary Hanoi in its vitality,' as the poet Bang Viet once wrote.”

The competition invites authors of all ages, both domestic and international, from professional to amateur writers, to share their unique perspectives and viewpoints.

Mr. Tran Van My, one of the writers invited to speak at the ceremony, also expressed his desire for participation from all age groups: "With 70 years having passed, we are entering the third generation since 1954. Young people have their own perspectives, and I hope to learn more about Hanoi through those perspectives."

The organizing committee will begin accepting entries from after the launch ceremony (March 28th) until September 10th, 2024 (based on the date on the postmark or displayed in your email inbox).

Entries must be in the form of essays, memoirs, notes, reports, or photojournalism. Each entry should not exceed 1,500 words (for memoirs and notes, a series of articles is acceptable, but a maximum of 3 installments, each not exceeding 1,500 words) and must include illustrative photographs.

The prize structure includes 1 first prize worth 30 million VND, 2 second prizes (15 million VND each), 3 third prizes (10 million VND each), and 10 consolation prizes (3 million VND each).

High-quality entries will be published on the Hanoi Moi online newspaper and the Hanoi Moi Weekend edition (published every Thursday) and will receive royalties according to the newspaper's regulations.

The closing ceremony and awards presentation are scheduled to take place on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 2024).
