Doctors at Quang Nam Provincial General Hospital recently saved the life of a patient whose right chest was pierced by a 5-meter-long iron bar. The cause was the patient's inability to react in time when a truck carrying the iron suddenly braked.
On the afternoon of January 15th, Dr. Le Nhat Nam, a specialist in Thoracic, Cardiovascular and Vascular Surgery (Quang Nam Provincial General Hospital), stated that doctors had successfully performed surgery to save the life of a patient with a complex wound in the right chest area caused by a steel rod piercing through it.
The patient is now out of critical condition and is being monitored and treated at the hospital.
Following the surgery, Mr. H. is out of danger and his health is gradually stabilizing.
Earlier, at 3:30 PM on January 14th, the Emergency Department (Quang Nam Provincial General Hospital) received patient NVH (48 years old, residing in Tam Tien commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province) who was brought in by his family in a critical condition with an iron bar lodged in his right chest, experiencing severe pain and difficulty breathing.
According to family members, Mr. H. was riding his motorbike on the road when a motorbike carrying iron bars came up behind him. Suddenly, the motorbike carrying the iron bars stopped abruptly, and Mr. H. didn't have time to brake, so an iron bar pierced his right chest.
After examination and emergency tests, doctors determined that the patient had a 5-meter-long, 5-centimeter-diameter round iron bar penetrating 10 cm through the chest, causing fractures of the posterior arches of ribs 2 and 4 on the right, fractures of the anterior arches of ribs 2, 3, and 4 on the right, and fractures of the lateral arch of rib 3 on the right.
In addition, the injury caused extensive contusion of the upper lobe of the right lung; hemothorax, right pneumothorax; subcutaneous emphysema of the right chest wall… The patient was admitted to the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department for surgery.
According to Doctor Le Nhat Nam, the 1 hour and 30 minute surgery successfully repaired the injury using microsurgery, restored the right chest wall, and performed minimally invasive pleural drainage, saving the patient's life.
