The French news agency AFP quoted Aliyev as noting that, precisely because the conditions have been set, both sides need to actively work on the content of the document.
Speaking about the future with Armenia, the Azerbaijani president emphasized: “There will certainly be no new war. I will do everything in my power to prevent it. Enough of the wars already!”
Earlier, on January 8, in an interview on Public TV , Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan stated that the country had responded to Baku's proposals for a peace treaty.
While affirming that there is "positive momentum" with the proposal, Grigoryan stated that there are still "certain issues that we hope to make progress on in the near future."
Nevertheless, both Armenia and Azerbaijan hope that a peace treaty will be finalized and signed as soon as possible.
Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are strained over control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This region lies deep within southwestern Azerbaijan, but has a majority Armenian population who wish to be annexed by Azerbaijan.
Tensions between the two neighboring countries escalated, culminating in a war that lasted from February 1988 to May 1994. Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in 1994 and numerous subsequent peace negotiations, conflict continues in the region.
Since 2008, Azerbaijan and Armenia have held dozens of high-level meetings to address this issue, but have yet to find a suitable solution.
In May 2022, the two countries announced the establishment of a border demarcation committee, a move seen as a step toward an early end to the Nagorno-Karabakh regional dispute.
