Black pig specialty in Tan Pheo

The model of raising free-range native black pigs with little care brings high efficiency to households in Tan Pheo commune.

Building a value chain from breeding to consumption has helped farmers make the most of local advantages, increase income and improve their lives. Mr. Ha Van Vung's farm in Tram hamlet is a typical model of semi-native pig grazing. With 3 hectares of independent hills, Mr. Vung has invested in building a natural breeding area with pens for pigs to eat and give birth, the rest are mostly left on the hills, free to forage.

Mr. Vung said: In the past, it took 2-3 people to take care of 70 pigs, but now I can manage them alone. Every day, I just cook bran and put it in the pen. The pigs come back to eat and then go up the hill. At night, the pigs don't come back to the pen either. Many sows don't come back to the pen to give birth but give birth right in the forest. Only when the mother pig brings her piglets home do they realize. This way of raising pigs is healthier, with less disease thanks to being able to exercise and live in a natural environment. This is a native breed of pig, so they adapt to natural conditions and the food source is simple and easy to find. Mainly agricultural by-products such as sweet potato leaves, water spinach, banana trees, combined with grass, trees, and wild bamboo shoots that they find themselves.

In addition, Mr. Vung also cooks rice bran and corn, locally available foods, which helps reduce input costs and generate higher profits. With this model, his family earns an average of more than 100 million VND per year. It is expected that in the near future, Mr. Vung will increase the herd to about 300 pigs.

Taking advantage of the locality, Tam Cuong Tan Minh Multi-Industry Cooperative has transformed the native pig from a small household animal into a commodity product with high economic value. This is an important turning point, a bridge, orientation and development of the native black pig farming chain in Tan Pheo and neighboring communes. The top goal of the Cooperative is to maintain and develop the native pig gene source, supply the market, ensure quality and food hygiene and safety. The Cooperative has selected purebred native pigs from traditional farming households, then bred and supplied them to members and associated households. To date, the Cooperative has had about 2,000 native black pigs with 53 participating households. The Cooperative encourages farmers to maintain traditional farming methods, creating delicious, firm meat quality.

Ms. Ha Thi Tam, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and Director of the Tam Cuong Tan Minh Multi-Industry Cooperative, said: Before the establishment of the Cooperative, my family had supplied local pork products in Tan Pheo to many markets, which were favored by consumers. The main form of raising pigs is free-range farming, creating delicious meat quality. After its establishment, the Cooperative aimed to develop local pig farming according to the supply chain for consumers from barns to dining tables. Thanks to the establishment of the Cooperative, Tan Minh black pork products have been brought to many large markets such as Hanoi , Hai Phong, Hung Yen... The price of live pigs is always higher than the market price, more than 100,000 VND/kg, bringing stable income to farmers.

In recent times, the indigenous black pig farming model in Tan Pheo commune has not only brought economic efficiency to each household but also created jobs, helping many highland people have a sustainable livelihood right on their own land. With the close connection between people and cooperatives, the indigenous black pig chain in Tan Pheo is growing stronger and stronger, opening up a new direction full of potential for highland farmers.
