This is the fourth time Vietnam has hosted this important event and also the first time the Vesak Festival has been held in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest economic , cultural and social center of the country.
This year’s event attracted more than 2,700 delegates, including nearly 1,300 international delegates from 85 countries and territories. It took place right after the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day.
The festival is not only an opportunity for international friends to deeply feel the spirit of peace, hospitality and aspiration for integration of the Vietnamese people, but also a vivid demonstration of a dynamic, creative, prosperous and strongly growing Vietnam.
The 2025 Vesak Celebration has contributed to spreading the value of Buddha's teachings for peace and serving humanity in the current turbulent world context. Thereby, affirming the role and position of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in the world Buddhist community, highlighting Vietnam's proactive and positive contributions to world peace and the implementation of the United Nations' sustainable development goals.
Emphasizing the significance of the event, Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon, Deputy Head of the Council of Patriarchs, Chairman of the Executive Council, Head of the Organizing Committee said: “This is a precious opportunity for the world Buddhist community to understand each other and share Buddhist values, traditions, and spiritual ideals in Buddhism. The wisdom that the Buddha enlightened has the ability to help the world become more harmonious, peaceful, socially sustainable, safe, and livable.”
Hosting this extremely meaningful international cultural diplomatic event also demonstrates the consistent policy of respecting and ensuring freedom of belief and religion of the Party and State of Vietnam. This is clearly demonstrated through the practice of peaceful and harmonious religious freedom and belief in Vietnam, and through the achievements that the religious community in general, and Buddhism in particular, have achieved over the past half century.
Most Venerable Dr. Tampalawela Dhammaratana, Vice President of the International Organizing Committee for the United Nations Day of Vesak (ICDV), expressed his deep impression of the professionalism in the preparation work of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and said that the previous commitments had been fully implemented. He also acknowledged the very active support from the Vietnamese Government to contribute to the success of the Festival.
The rich symbolic image of the five-colored Great Flag symbolizing the connection of the five continents fluttering in the sky of Vietnam clarifies the message that Buddhism wants to send to the world: An aspiration to spread compassion, transcending all religious or ethnic borders.
The special feature of Vesak 2025 is the spirit of openness, not only for Buddhists but for everyone, spreading the message of harmony, connecting multiculturalism and affirming Vietnam as a peace-loving destination, aiming towards global progressive values.
