Ensuring safe and efficient harvesting of summer-autumn rice.

For the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop, Vinh Thanh district has met its planting targets. Currently, the rice is developing well, and many fields are already ready for harvest. Local authorities are implementing comprehensive measures for care, protection, and the application of mechanization in harvesting, hoping for a successful harvest with high yields and minimal losses.

The summer-autumn rice crop is developing well and yielding high productivity in Vinh Thanh district.

Along the rural roads in Vinh Thanh district in late May 2025, rice fields were filled with ripe, golden grains, ready for harvest. Farmers in Vinh Thanh district began cultivating and caring for the rice, managing water in the fields to facilitate mechanized harvesting... Mr. Tran Van Tam, from Vinh Trinh commune, Vinh Thanh district, said: "This year's summer-autumn crop, my family sowed over 10 acres of land. Thanks to applying the '1 must, 5 reductions' farming technique, the rice is developing well, reducing production costs. At the beginning of the rainy season, rice is prone to diseases like leaf blast and grain discoloration... My family pays special attention to caring for the rice, ensuring sufficient water for growth, and guaranteeing high yields at harvest. We follow the recommendations of the district's Department of Agriculture ."

This year's summer-autumn rice crop in Vinh Thanh district covers an area of over 24,690 hectares, primarily using rice varieties such as OM5451, OM4218, OM18, and other specialty fragrant rice varieties. Due to the specific soil characteristics, the Vinh Thanh district Department of Agriculture divided the planting into two phases in the South Cai San and North Cai San areas. The summer-autumn rice crop in South Cai San is developing well, from green to ripe, with many areas already ready for harvest. In North Cai San, the rice is mainly in the heading and green ripening stages, and farmers are focusing on managing and supplying sufficient water to the rice fields to ensure good plant growth and grain production. According to the Vinh Thanh district Department of Agriculture, to achieve a successful summer-autumn rice crop and avoid disease and pest damage, the locality is applying advanced production methods such as "3 reductions, 3 increases," "1 must, 5 reductions," and integrated pest management. The district's Department of Agriculture and the communes and towns are guiding and supporting farmers in protecting dikes and focusing on pumping and irrigation to minimize damage caused by water shortages and drought. In particular, the Vinh Thanh district Department of Agriculture is advising farmers to switch to crops that require less water during this summer-autumn season. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hien, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Thanh district, said: "For this summer-autumn rice crop, the locality is developing a rice variety structure that ensures balance, disease safety, and suitability to production realities and the market; focusing on high-quality rice varieties such as OM 5451, OM 18, OM 34... and recommending farmers use certified seeds or higher. The Department of Agriculture requires localities to encourage farmers to plant seeds simultaneously while maintaining the correct spacing between crops, in order to ensure production efficiency, rice grain quality, and minimize post-harvest losses…".

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Thanh district, by the end of May 2025, farmers in Vinh Thanh district had harvested nearly 1,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, with an average yield of 6.56 tons/ha (equivalent to the 2024 summer-autumn crop). Farmers harvested and sold fresh rice at prices ranging from 7,000-7,200 VND/kg for Dai Thom 8, 6,400-6,800 VND/kg for OM 18, 6,000-6,200 VND/kg for OM 5451, and 5,500-5,700 VND/kg for IR 50404. These prices are lower than the same period in 2024, but farmers are still making a profit. Currently, most of the rice fields are in the ripening to heading stage, with only a small area in some localities in Bac Cai San still in the heading stage. At the beginning of the rainy season, the main pest and disease is rice blast, due to the weather conditions this week, with moderate to heavy rain in some areas during the rice ripening stage. The infection rate on rice in the ripening stage is 5-10%, mainly concentrated in some localities in Vinh Thanh district. In addition, other pests and diseases such as brown planthopper, leaf roller, neck blast, leaf blight, and premature yellowing of leaves... are appearing and causing scattered damage to rice crops in the heading to ripening stages. Monitoring and timely control are necessary.

In addition, the Agriculture Department of Vinh Thanh district also advises that rats are causing scattered damage to rice crops from the heading to ripening stage, mainly in small, localized areas near dikes and orchards in Vinh Thanh district. Farmers need to apply rat control measures to protect their rice crops safely and effectively. Leaf-rolling caterpillars are appearing and causing scattered damage with low population densities in Vinh Thanh district. Rice blast disease (leaf and neck blast) is appearing on rice crops from the heading to ripening stage, requiring proactive disease management before and after heading. Especially, the rainy season is underway, with occasional heavy rains causing lodging in rice crops from the ripening stage, mainly appearing in clumps, in some low-lying areas, and in areas with excessive nitrogen fertilization.

The Department of Agriculture of Vinh Thanh District advises: during the heading-to-grain stage, irrigate the rice fields and maintain a water level of 3-5cm to promote rapid, even heading and good grain filling. Fertilization is not necessary at this stage as sufficient and timely fertilizer has already been provided in previous applications. Farmers are advised to continue monitoring pest populations in the fields for timely control. For rice from the grain-filling to ripening stage, farmers are advised to apply integrated technical solutions for rice care. Depending on the soil type, farmers are advised to drain the entire field 10 days before harvest to ensure even ripening and a firm soil surface, facilitating harvesting and transportation, minimizing lodging during ripening, thus protecting yield, reducing post-harvest losses, and ensuring grain quality. In rainy or stormy weather, farmers preparing for harvest should proactively contact harvesting equipment and traders to ensure timely harvesting and minimize losses. In addition, for rice fields that have just been harvested and are being prepared for the next crop, the local Department of Agriculture advises farmers to clean the fields and apply phosphorus fertilizer at the beginning of the season to limit organic poisoning and ensure a minimum interval of 3 weeks between the two crops…
