Summer-autumn rice grows well and gives high yield in Vinh Thanh district.

Along the rural traffic routes in Vinh Thanh district in the last days of May 2025, there are rice fields with even, firm, bright yellow grains, ready for harvest. Farmers in Vinh Thanh district have started to produce, care for rice, and manage water in the fields to make harvesting by machine more convenient... Mr. Tran Van Tam, in Vinh Trinh commune, Vinh Thanh district, said: "This summer-autumn crop, my family sowed over 10 hectares of land. Thanks to the application of the "1 must, 5 reduction" farming technique, the rice has grown well, reducing production costs. At the beginning of the rainy season, rice is susceptible to leaf blast and grain rot... The family pays special attention to the care and sufficient water for the rice to grow, ensuring high yields at harvest, and follows the recommendations of the district's Department of Agriculture ".

This summer-autumn crop, Vinh Thanh district planted over 24,690 hectares of rice, mainly OM5451, OM4218, OM18 and specialty fragrant rice varieties. Due to the soil characteristics, the Vinh Thanh district Department of Agriculture divided the planting into 2 phases in the South Cai San and North Cai San areas. The summer-autumn rice crop in the South Cai San is in a good development stage, from green to ripe, in which many areas have been harvested. In the North Cai San, the rice is mainly in the flowering and green stage and farmers are focusing on managing and providing enough water to the rice fields for the plants to grow and produce good grains. According to the Vinh Thanh district Department of Agriculture, in order to have a successful summer-autumn rice crop, avoiding the destruction of diseases and pests, the locality applies advanced production measures of "3 reductions, 3 increases", "1 must, 5 reductions", and integrated disease management in production. The district's Department of Agriculture and communes and towns guide and support people in protecting dikes, concentrating on pumping equipment to limit the damage caused by water shortages and droughts... In particular, the Department of Agriculture of Vinh Thanh district recommends that farmers switch to crops that use less water in this summer-autumn crop. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hien, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Thanh district, said: "This summer-autumn rice crop, the locality builds a rice variety production structure that ensures balanced requirements, disease safety, and is suitable for production and market realities; focuses on groups of high-quality rice varieties, such as OM 5451, OM 18, OM 34... and recommends that farmers use certified varieties or higher. The Department of Agriculture requires localities to mobilize farmers to plant concentrated seeds simultaneously but still ensure the time between crops, in order to ensure production efficiency, rice grain quality and limit post-harvest losses...".

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Thanh district, by the end of May 2025, farmers in Vinh Thanh district harvested nearly 1,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, with an average yield of 6.56 tons/ha (equivalent to the summer-autumn crop in 2024). Farmers harvested and sold fresh rice at prices of 7,000-7,200 VND/kg for Dai Thom 8, 6,400-6,800 VND/kg for OM 18, 6,000-6,200 VND/kg for OM 5451, and 5,500-5,700 VND/kg for IR 50404. This price is lower than the same period in 2024, but farmers still make a profit... Currently, most of the rice area in the fields is mainly concentrated in the green to ripe stage, with only a part of the rice area remaining in some localities in Bac Cai San. At the beginning of the rainy season, the main disease is grain rot, due to the influence of weather conditions during the week, some places have moderate to heavy rain at the time when the rice is green. The area infected with rice in the green stage has a disease rate of 5-10%, mainly concentrated in some localities in Vinh Thanh district. In addition, some other pests such as brown planthoppers, leaf rollers, rice blast, leaf blight, early ripening yellow leaves... appear and cause damage sporadically on rice from the flowering to green stage, need to be prevented, monitored for timely prevention and treatment.

In addition, the Department of Agriculture of Vinh Thanh district also recommends that rats cause damage sporadically in areas of ripening to green maturity, locally, and in small areas distributed near the dike, near fruit gardens in Vinh Thanh district. Farmers need to apply measures to kill rats to protect rice safely and effectively; leaf rollers appear and cause damage sporadically with low density in Vinh Thanh district; leaf blast and neck blast appear on rice crops from the ripening to green maturity stage, so it is necessary to proactively manage the disease before and after the rice crops ripen. In particular, the weather is in the rainy season, sometimes heavy rain causes the green maturity to fall on the ripe rice crops, mainly appearing in clusters, in some low-lying areas, with excess nitrogen fertilizer...

Vinh Thanh District Department of Agriculture recommends: rice in the flowering - green solid stage needs to be watered into the field and kept 3-5cm deep for the rice to flower quickly, evenly and become solid, no need to fertilize at this stage when providing adequate and timely fertilizer in previous fertilizations; recommends that farmers continue to monitor the density of pests in the field for timely prevention and control. Rice from green solid to ripe stage, recommends that farmers should apply comprehensive technical solutions to care for the rice. Depending on the soil, it is recommended that farmers drain all water in the field 10 days before harvest so that the rice ripens evenly, the hard ground helps when harvesting and transporting rice easily, minimizing the level of lodging during the ripening stage to protect productivity, limit post-harvest loss and ensure the quality of rice grains... In rainy and stormy weather conditions, when rice crops are about to be harvested, farmers need to proactively contact harvesters and traders to keep up with the harvest progress, limit loss. In addition, on newly harvested rice fields preparing for the next crop, the local Department of Agriculture recommends that farmers clean the fields and apply phosphate fertilizer right from the beginning of the season to limit organic poisoning and ensure a gap of 3 weeks or more between crops...
