4km from the pig farm still smell the stench
Since the end of August, people in the mountainous commune of Tan Phuc and Lang Chanh town of Lang Chanh district (Thanh Hoa) began to detect a foul smell coming from the pig farm of Agri-Vina Agricultural Investment Joint Stock Company.

Local residents reported that the stench is often strong from 5-7am and from 3-4pm every day, seriously affecting people's lives and activities.
Notably, not only the people of Tan Phuc commune - where the farm was built - were affected, but even the people of Lang Chanh town, about 4 km (as the crow flies) away from the farm, also smelled the stench.
Mr. TVT (38 years old, living in Lang Chanh town) said: "Recently, the stench from the pig farm in Tan Phuc commune has been tormenting our people. When building the pig farm, we thought that since it was 4-5 km away, it would definitely not be affected, but now the experimental farm has caused the stench to reach here. If we raise enough pigs on a scale of 60,000, we don't know what will happen."
Schools, hospitals, and offices also suffer from the stench.
According to the reporter's investigation, the high-tech pig farm project combined with production forest planting of Agri-Vina Agricultural Investment Joint Stock Company was decided by the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province to lease land from July 2022, with a total area of over 37 hectares. Of which, nearly 18 hectares of land area is for building pig farming projects with a scale of raising 60,000 pigs per year; and the remaining 19 hectares are for production forest planting.
The farm has a capacity of raising 60,000 pigs per year, but when it only raised 700 pigs on a trial basis, it caused environmental pollution.
After being granted a construction permit, the company built dozens of rows of barns and started a trial raising of 700 pigs in August. However, during the trial raising phase, a foul smell arose, affecting people's lives.
Mr. Hoang Van Thanh, Chairman of Lang Chanh District People's Committee confirmed that the pig farm of Agri-Vina Agricultural Investment Joint Stock Company has recently caused a foul smell affecting the lives of people in Tan Phuc commune and some areas of Lang Chanh town.
"Recently, the stench has been spreading every day, affecting residential areas, offices, schools, hospitals in Lang Chanh Town and residential areas in Tan Phuc Commune, causing public outrage. Many people have posted about the environmental pollution of the pig farm on social networks, and there is a potential risk of mass complaints to authorities at all levels because of the pollution," said Mr. Thanh.
Mr. Thanh also added that the initial inspection by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Lang Chanh District showed that the foul smell was caused by a faulty waste and exhaust gas treatment system. Therefore, the People's Committee of Lang Chanh District requested Agri-Vina Agricultural Investment Joint Stock Company to quickly fix and complete the waste treatment systems, and at the same time requested the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thanh Hoa to establish an inspection team to verify and clarify responsibilities.
