The flow of the Thu Bon River is closely linked to the flow of the Quang Nam region. Through the ups and downs of time, scattered on both sides of the river from upstream to downstream are still many valuable "sediments" which are typical community eco-tourism villages and traditional craft villages of Quang Nam such as: Dai Binh village (Nong Son); Ban Thach mat village (Duy Xuyen); Phuoc Kieu bronze casting village (Dien Ban); Thanh Ha pottery village, Cam Kim carpentry village (Hoi An)...
And richer than natural resources are two UNESCO-recognized world cultural heritages, Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary, which are also closely associated with the Thu Bon River.
It will be an unforgettable journey for visitors when departing from Hoi An ancient town, going upstream on the Thu River to explore the many indigenous values of the land and ending the journey at the mysterious My Son temple complex.
Mr. Le Ngoc Thuan - founder of the "Firewood Village" project in Cam Ha, Hoi An City, said that Thu Bon River is not simply a river, it is a flow of trade, culture, and art, thereby contributing to the creation of heritage for Quang Nam. Hopefully in the near future, craft villages along Thu Bon River will have many innovations with unique products and stories to survive and importantly, connect into an "ecosystem" to develop together sustainably based on tourism.
Surveys and calls for service and tourism development related to this river have been conducted for a long time, but when evaluating the potential for exploiting river tourism on the Thu Bon River, all relevant parties agree that tourism products are still not really attractive to tourists and are also entangled with regulations on planning and traffic...
Need to promote cooperation between parties
At the National Scientific Conference “Duy Xuyen in the historical process of the nation” recently held to celebrate the 420th anniversary of the name Duy Xuyen (1604 - 2024), many experts proposed the need to research and develop unique products and services, many artistic, cultural and festival activities organized right on the river to attract tourists to take tours.
At the same time, organize the planning of wharves and connect tourist attractions and craft villages together, creating a tourist route to connect Hoi An ancient town with many famous traditional craft villages of Quang Nam and My Son Temple Complex.
Mr. Van Ba Son - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that in order to promote the exploitation of the potential of Thu Bon river tourism, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just proposed the authorities of Hoi An City - Dien Ban Town - Duy Xuyen District to study the content of cooperation between the three localities to form river tourism routes on the Thu Bon River and its tributaries.
At the same time, review local plans on wharves to invest in serving tourist transportation, connecting tourist attractions, craft villages... need to invest more in tourism infrastructure, beautify the landscape on both sides of the river.
In the immediate future, the three localities need to coordinate to invite interested businesses, together with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, relevant sectors and units to conduct a survey of the route to develop a product development project... The Department will support connecting with travel agencies and investors inside and outside the province to conduct surveys, have investment and exploitation plans... At the same time, it will support training on the management and exploitation of destination services according to the unit's work plan.

Also according to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, to truly create a different tourism value for the Thu Bon River, it is necessary to integrate culture with tourism, to create a unique cultural feature of Quang Nam and the locality, helping to diversify river tourism products.
In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the role of enterprises, create an open and transparent mechanism, propose a management mechanism for river tourism development models; call on enterprises to invest in tours and river tourism routes, and at the same time invest in passenger transport ships to ensure quality and safety so that tourists can both sightsee and relax.
