According to history books, Dinh Van Ta was a prisoner under house arrest but with his literary and martial talents, he was highly regarded by the royal court and became a great general. Stories about General Dinh Van Ta are passed down in a thrilling and fascinating way. In the book " Tang thuong ngau luc " there is a passage about Dinh Van Ta as follows: During the Le Trung Hung period, in Ham Giang village (Hai Duong province) there was a man named Dinh Van Ta, strong in stature and aggressive in temperament.
Next to the village was a large river more than a mile wide, every day he and his friends went swimming. One day, when they heard the sound of gongs and drums worshiping the gods from the other side of the river, he and his friends challenged each other to swim across the river to steal the gong from the other village and bring it back. Immediately after that, Dinh Van Ta waded into the river, swam to the other side, sneaked into the communal house and stole the gong, brought it out, then swam back down the river. When he reached the middle of the river, he still beat the gong so loudly that it echoed throughout the river. Only then did the other side of the village realize that the gong had been stolen and tried to find a boat to chase after it, but it was too late.
Later, because he was caught red-handed committing a crime, Dinh Van Ta was imprisoned in Dong Mon prison.

The guards continued to ask him to shoot again to verify, and once again, Dinh Van Ta hit every shot. News of the prisoner's extraordinary shooting ability quickly spread to Lord Trinh. Soon after, Lord Trinh decided to pardon and let Dinh Van Ta go to battle. Not disappointing his expectations, he continuously made great achievements and was awarded the title of Duke.
However, Dinh Van Ta returned the royal decree, refused to accept the title, and only asked to have his name removed from the record book. However, Lord Trinh still decided to confer on him the title of District Duke as a worthy recognition.
