"Pocket" the secret to saving money during Tet

Báo Gia đình Việt NamBáo Gia đình Việt Nam27/01/2025

With the economic difficulties and modest bonuses, many young families have planned to shop for the traditional Tet holiday at a cost-effective price. This not only helps save money but also helps women not to hesitate, calculate, and choose too much in the last days of the year.

Plan your spending

Every time Tet comes, the story of how to spend Tet reasonably is discussed by women. In fact, how much to spend Tet and how to spend Tet depends on how much money you have to spend Tet as well as your major expenses for Tet. Tet 2025, after a year of fluctuations, economic difficulties, with modest Tet bonuses, many families have planned to "tighten" their spending.

Ms. Lai Thi Tuyet (36 years old, currently working as an office worker in Hanoi , mother of 3 children) said that this year, her salary and bonus were reduced by half compared to previous years. Therefore, about 3 weeks before Tet, she planned her Tet spending. For her, planning Tet spending, recording specific and careful expenses helps her control and avoid the situation of "overspending" and buying whatever she likes. "Doing so when you need to review, it is also convenient to learn from experience to see what you have spent, whether there is any expense that should not have been spent or not," Ms. Tuyet said.

According to Ms. Tuyet, this year, her family has cut down on spending, only buying necessary things, not decorating lavishly but just enough to use. She plans to spend and shop within a fixed amount of money for Tet. In particular, she clearly divides which part of the money is for giving to both parents, and which part is for shopping and spending when visiting the paternal and maternal homes.

At home, Ms. Tuyet also does not buy too many things, only buying necessary items. Previously, she often had the habit of buying a lot of things to stock up with the thought of "buying once saves having to go out a lot" or fearing that Tet would run out of stock. However, in recent years, she realized that most markets and stores are open every day, some only close on the first day of Tet, so there is no need to stock up. Because you may buy too much and not use it all or the items are no longer fresh and of good quality.

Finally, to save money, her family limits eating out and having fun outside during Tet because shops, restaurants, and entertainment areas all have slightly increased prices, so eating out and partying outside constantly will be costly.

Shop early for Tet

According to many housewives, the secret to shopping both leisurely and saving money is to shop early and "hunt" for promotions to be able to buy satisfactory items at affordable prices. In fact, retailers have organized deep discount promotions early, bringing convenient shopping opportunities to consumers, along with additional services.

Every year, Ms. Le Thu Huong (Tay Mo ward, Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) always researches the promotional programs of supermarkets early to plan her shopping early. "Because I have already made a list of items to buy, as soon as the supermarkets launch promotional programs, I take the opportunity to buy early dried goods such as bamboo shoots, vermicelli, shiitake mushrooms, candies, gift baskets...", Ms. Huong said. This helps her reduce some costs, manage her spending and have more leisure time in the days before Tet.

People go to buy peach blossoms for Tet

Sharing the same criteria for saving Tet spending, Ms. Pham Thi Hong (Hoang Mai district, Hanoi) said that she often shops for Tet early, from the 10th to the 17th of the lunar month. According to her, this is also a way to save money because the closer to Tet, the higher the demand for shopping, the faster the goods run out, of course, prices will escalate, many scarce items will be pushed up in price while you must have it during Tet so you have to grit your teeth and spend a large amount of money to buy it. Therefore, according to her, you should shop for Tet early, limit the time before Tet to start shopping, not only can you not buy good products, but also spend a lot of money due to expensive prices.

With Ms. Hang's experience, she usually buys dry goods first, then she will make a list of offerings for the ancestors during the 3 days of Tet, New Year's Eve, Ong Cong Ong Tao Festival... Paternal Tet, maternal Tet and people on the list that need to be thoughtful.

Regarding Tet clothes, Ms. Hong's family will sit down and review whether they really need to buy them or not. She will prioritize ao dai for women and vests for men. If it's cold, add a coat and scarf. That way, the fashion will not go out of style and there will be no headache about what to wear. She also hires someone to clean the house before the 20th day of the lunar calendar. Or every day, she and her family clean each room and each area.

When decorating the house, besides peach blossoms and kumquat trees, instead of using expensive flowers in the house, I will use traditional flowers, creatively using the way I like, not following the crowd. "Finally, cooking for Tet should be calculated, and not cooking too many dishes, if you don't eat them all, it will be a waste", Ms. Hong advised.

Ms. Tran Thi Hue (30 years old, currently working in Hanoi) said that her family often returns to her hometown to celebrate Tet with her family. Her hometown is in a mountainous district of Thanh Hoa province, so she finds Tet shopping not too expensive.

“All the ingredients for wrapping the cakes are available at home, and the family grows peach blossoms and many other flowers. I don’t buy new clothes, but only prepare some money to give as lucky money to relatives. For me, lucky money is a beautiful cultural feature at the beginning of the year, so I will pay attention to the age and relationship of the recipient to prepare the lucky money envelope accordingly. With a reasonable way of spending, it will help me have a frugal, warm and still full Tet,” Ms. Hue confided.
