Starting in 2027, US investment in semiconductor manufacturing is expected to surpass that of China, Taiwan (China), and South Korea. This is according to a recent assessment by the Semiconductor Association for Semiconductors (SEMI).
According to SEMI, US spending on chip factories and equipment will increase from approximately $21 billion per year currently to $33 billion by 2027, reaching a total of approximately $158 billion between 2027 and 2030. The main drivers of this investment wave are the booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips and the US government 's policies to promote domestic production.
Major technology companies such as TSMC, Samsung, and Micron have all committed to investing heavily in the US, boosting the expansion of their chip manufacturing operations.
China is also projected to invest $94 billion in equipment procurement between 2026 and 2028, but primarily for traditional chip manufacturing due to US restrictions on the export of advanced technologies.
