By 2027, US semiconductor manufacturing investment is expected to surpass that of China, Taiwan (China) and South Korea, according to a recent report by the Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SEMI).
According to SEMI, US spending on chip plants and equipment will increase from about $21 billion per year today to $33 billion by 2027, reaching a total of about $158 billion between 2027 and 2030. The main drivers for this wave of investment are the booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips and the US government 's policy of promoting domestic production.
Major technology companies such as TSMC, Samsung, and Micron have all committed to investing heavily in the US, promoting the expansion of chip manufacturing activities.
China is also forecast to invest $94 billion in equipment purchases between 2026 and 2028, but this will mainly be for traditional chip production due to US restrictions on exports of advanced technology.
