Oil lumps stuck to people swimming in Tuy Hoa beach

A large amount of clumped oil appeared on Tuy Hoa City beach (Phu Yen), sticking to people and tourists swimming in the sea.

According to residents and tourists, at the beach areas in Tuy Hoa, from the afternoon of April 30 to the morning of May 1, many oil stains and lumps of oil appeared in the area near Nghinh Phong tower, stretching hundreds of meters.

In addition, a large amount of seaweed also washed ashore in Tuy Hoa City. Many people after swimming in the sea came ashore to find oil stuck to their bodies, their hands and feet were black.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan (42 years old, Tuy Hoa resident) said: "The smelly oil sticks to my legs and arms. I have to wash and scrub for a long time but it still doesn't come off.

This situation happened right during the holidays, so it greatly affected the locals and tourists because every afternoon we go down here to swim. I hope the government will soon take measures to collect and handle it."

Mr. Nguyen Cong Thanh - Vice Chairman of Tuy Hoa City People's Committee - confirmed that oil clumps appeared on Tuy Hoa beach: "The city has directed to cordon off and cordon off the oil spill and clumps on Tuy Hoa beach. On May 1, the authorities will collect the oil, and at the same time, the specialized agency will determine the cause of this situation," said Mr. Thanh.

In March 2023, at Tuy Hoa beach, there was also an oil spill and oil clumps drifting in. Experts determined that the cause of this oil spill was waste oil (FO oil residue) discharged by large ships at sea, but the level and volume were small.
