Integrating AI into volunteer medical examination and treatment activities.
Recently, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Young Doctors Association, in coordination with the CAREME program, organized the launching ceremony of the "Young Doctors Following Uncle Ho's Teachings, Volunteering for Community Health" journey in 2025, with the theme "Young Doctors Taking the Lead and Striving in the Digital Age". This year's journey is expected to take place nationwide from May to November 2025, with four teams: Volunteer medical examination; Digital transformation in healthcare ; Disease screening; and Blood, tissue, and organ donation mobilization.
A highlight of this year's journey is the increased application of AI in volunteer medical examination and treatment activities. Accordingly, in addition to their professional duties, the teams are also tasked with disseminating information and guiding people on disease screening using the online platform of the Vietnam Young Doctors Association, and AI-based disease screening on the page: http://khoemanh.net.
Simultaneously, we will implement app-based installation and consultation for those in need of remote healthcare, providing health and nutrition advice to the public. We will also develop electronic medical records, conduct research to gather public opinion on health status, and provide remote health monitoring and care for the people.
The goal is to screen 1 million people for diseases through AI platforms this year. In addition, the plan includes organizing "AI education for the general public" programs for young people, intensive courses on AI in healthcare for young doctors and medical professionals, and collaborating with technology companies to develop and perfect AI platforms to serve doctors, medical professionals, and the public, facilitating regular healthcare services and the digital transformation of healthcare.
Sharing his thoughts on this year's journey, Mr. Nguyen Tuong Lam, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Youth Union, President of the Vietnam Youth Union, and head of the journey's organizing committee, said: “With the theme "Young Doctors Taking the Lead and Striving in the Digital Age," the program has closely followed the Party's major orientations, clearly demonstrating the responsibility and pioneering spirit of young doctors and medical professionals in accessing and mastering modern technological achievements: from digital healthcare, artificial intelligence, big data in medicine, to telemedicine and personalized medicine. That spirit is also the guiding principle throughout this year's journey.”
For AI to become an effective support tool.
In fact, in recent years, modern technology in general and AI in particular have become an indispensable part, being strongly and effectively applied in medical examination and treatment at many large hospitals across the country.
At Bach Mai Hospital, AI is making significant strides in the detection and management of gastrointestinal diseases, especially in endoscopy. AI systems not only improve the detection rate of polyps and cancers at an early stage but also contribute to minimizing human error, thereby enhancing treatment effectiveness and the quality of healthcare services.
For example, at Military Central Hospital 108, the application of AI in CT-guided lung biopsy techniques makes the biopsy process more accurate, safer, and more efficient thanks to its ability to assist in planning, needle navigation, reducing radiation dose, and monitoring complications.
Overall, the application of AI in the healthcare sector is opening up new avenues, contributing to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment in Vietnam. This is also the view shared by Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Tri Thuc with the media recently: “The development shows that AI has been and is being applied increasingly widely in the healthcare sector, especially in supporting diagnostic imaging, optimizing treatment protocols, and improving hospital management efficiency. Some large hospitals have initially implemented AI in medical examination and treatment, yielding positive results.”
However, for AI to truly become an effective tool in medical examination and treatment, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Tri Thuc believes that a comprehensive legal framework is needed to ensure data security and accuracy in application. The Ministry of Health affirms that in the coming time, it will focus on perfecting the system of legal documents related to the application of AI in the health sector, aiming to ensure the verification and evaluation of technology quality before its application in clinical practice. Simultaneously, the training of medical personnel capable of accessing and using AI effectively will also be emphasized and promoted.
