Bubble tea is a favorite drink among young people thanks to its rich, creamy flavor, easy-to-drink sweetness, and chewy tapioca pearls.

It's not uncommon to see colorful bubble tea drinks everywhere, from cafes to social media. However, consuming too much of this beverage can negatively impact the liver, according to the Indian health website Onlymyhealth .

The effects of bubble tea on the liver.

According to Dr. Neha Bhatt at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, India, milk tea contains a high amount of sugar. A typical cup of milk tea contains over 50 grams of sugar, exceeding the recommended daily intake for an adult.

Most of the sugar used is refined sugar, which contains a lot of fructose. When the body absorbs too much sugar, the liver has to work harder to process it.

According to Ms. Bhatt, excess fructose is metabolized by the liver into fat. In the long term, fat accumulates in the liver, causing a condition called MASLD, which is fatty liver disease related to metabolic disorders.

Alarmingly, MASLD is becoming increasingly common, especially among young people. The early stages of the disease often have no obvious symptoms, leaving many unaware they have it. However, if left unchecked, the fat in the liver can cause more serious damage.

Tapioca pearls do not contain fiber.

It's not just the sugar; the tapioca pearls in bubble tea also contribute to putting extra strain on the liver.

Tapioca pearls are made from cassava starch, a refined carbohydrate that contains no fiber, vitamins, or minerals. They only provide empty calories and sugar, increasing overall energy intake without offering any nutritional benefits.

How to protect your liver health

To minimize the negative health effects of bubble tea, Ms. Bhatt advises consumers to consume the drink in moderation.

You can choose a lower sugar level, such as 25%, or no sugar at all, and order a small size instead of a large one. In addition, prioritize drinking plain water, unsweetened tea, or eating fresh fruit to provide your body with hydration and nutrients.
