Experts say that pure black coffee contains many compounds beneficial to liver health and may even help protect the body from chronic liver diseases, from reducing inflammation to lowering the risk of fatty liver disease, according to the Hindustan Times (India).
The risk of cirrhosis is reduced by up to 44%.
According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist in California who trained at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Harvard University, and Stanford University (USA), black coffee is one of the best liver-protective beverages known to mankind.

Numerous large studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers have up to a 44% lower risk of cirrhosis.

People who drink coffee regularly have a lower risk of cirrhosis and related liver complications. This habit also improves liver enzyme levels in those at risk.
Dr. Sethi stated: "Numerous large studies have shown that people who regularly drink coffee have up to a 44% lower risk of cirrhosis. In addition, regular coffee consumption is associated with reduced ALT and AST levels – two indicators monitored in tests to assess liver damage or inflammation."
Prevent fatty liver disease, reduce hepatitis.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming increasingly common worldwide . However, research suggests that coffee may play a positive role in protecting the liver and contributing to its prevention.
In addition, coffee contains many powerful antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the liver. Specifically, chlorogenic acid in coffee helps reduce oxidative stress – a major mechanism causing chronic liver damage.
How much should I drink each day?
According to Dr. Sethi, 2-3 cups of coffee per day is the "ideal threshold" to maximize liver-protective benefits. A large meta-analysis of over 400,000 people showed that this consumption level yielded the highest liver-protective effect.
The liver-protective benefits of coffee primarily come from polyphenols, not caffeine. Therefore, decaf coffee can still offer similar benefits. According to Dr. Sethi, even decaf coffee drinkers have reported similar improvements in liver enzymes in direct comparative studies.
