| Women's Union members attend training on "Family conflict resolution skills" |
Get involved in time
Ms. Ng.TT (Quang Dien commune) once panicked and ran to her neighbor's house to call for help because her husband beat her in a fit of jealousy for no reason. The conflict had accumulated for many days, putting her marriage on the verge of breaking up.
As soon as they received the information, the Women's Union of Quang Dien commune sent staff to the house, listened to the feelings of both husband and wife, analyzed the causes and provided guidance on how to resolve the conflict. The union arranged for the two sides to sit down and talk, and sign a commitment not to repeat the violence. Thanks to the patient encouragement, Ms. T's family life gradually stabilized, her husband realized his mistakes and changed his behavior.
Before Ms. T.'s case, the Women's Union of Quang Dien commune successfully mediated two family conflicts and promptly prevented a case of child abuse.
Ms. Phan Thi Phuong My, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee (VFF), President of the Women's Union of Quang Dien commune, said: "Many women are abused but choose to remain silent. Therefore, the Women's Union of the commune always proactively grasp the area and provide timely support so that no one has to suffer in their own home. When women are listened to and supported, violence can be completely prevented and repelled."
Equip yourself with skills to protect yourself
The case of Ms. TT Ng. (My Thuong Ward) is also a story of determination. After many years of enduring her husband's hot temper and violence, Ms. Ng. once thought of ending her tearful marriage. But after receiving advice from the Ward Women's Union, guidance on coping skills and legal support, she learned to speak up to protect herself.
That change also made her husband change, no longer looking down on her. The couple gradually had a common voice, Ms. Ng's husband was also happy, took care of business and gave up violent behavior. Ms. Ng's family now lives in a harmonious atmosphere.
Ms. Ng. shared: “If it weren’t for the women’s associations at all levels, I would probably still be suffering. Because I still thought that if I kept quiet and endured, my children wouldn’t have to suffer the family breakup. But now I understand that if I want a happy family, first of all, a woman must know how to love herself.”
Not only intervening in cases of physical violence, the association at all levels also regularly propagates and encourages members to know how to resist and protect themselves when subjected to mental violence. Because mental violence often exists silently and causes deep damage, especially to young women and children.
Over the past 3 years, the Women's Union at all levels has organized over 200 communication activities, providing knowledge on gender equality and skills to prevent and combat violence for hundreds of thousands of women. The models of "Family of 5 no, 3 clean", "Core Women's Union for preventing and combating violence", "Safe house for children" have been widely deployed, contributing to significantly reducing the number of family conflicts.
Ms. Tran Thi Kim Loan, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and President of the City Women's Union, emphasized: "Women in the new era need courage, knowledge and skills to protect themselves. The city will continue to build a support network for women who are victims of violence, strengthen supervision at the grassroots level and promote communication to eliminate domestic violence from the root."
Ms. Loan said that the City Women's Union will continue to expand communication in the community, helping people change their awareness of gender equality. At the same time, it will provide training to equip knowledge and improve the capacity of union officials, especially psychological and legal counseling skills; closely coordinate with local agencies, organizations and unions to create a safety network for women and children.
