Released on June 1, the film competes with many foreign blockbusters. According to data from Box Office, an independent box office monitoring unit, De Men sold more than 59,000 tickets over the weekend, earning 5.6 billion VND, behind Doraemon, Mission Impossible 8, Lilo & Stitch. Previously, the producer said there was no pressure when competing with big international brands.
The plus points of the work are the beautiful images and effects. The film limits the weaknesses of previous Vietnamese 3D animations. The cast of characters has quite natural expressions and movements. The animals are designed vividly, with their own characteristics, and some variations related to age and gender.
The producer incorporated many cultural elements such as: The Water Spiders group wore stylized costumes made from the four-panel shirt; Tong Coc wore the traditional shirt, and his turban was a half-used roll of tape. The frogs played musical instruments made from the top of Sao Vang. The space of the Swamp Hamlet, the scenery of mountains and rivers, and tea hills, was lively. The fighting scenes created a dramatic atmosphere.
In response to comments that the film resembles Pixar's 1998 film A Bug's Life , director Mai Phuong said: "This is unavoidable because both are based on insects. We cannot exaggerate too much, losing the characteristics of the animal."
Music contributes to the emotion and depth of the film. In the opening scene, the song creates a sad tone when talking about the loneliness of De Men, when he is lost living in the big city. In the following part, the funny rap parts of Rau Que and Mantis create humorous highlights. Tong Coc's rap song is inspired by the folk poem "Con toad is the son of God/ Whoever hits him will be struck by God". Another song sung by the group Nhen Nuoc is inspired by the poem of Han Mac Tu. The songs are arranged by Masew - producer Bac Bling, A Loi .
The script is easy to predict, without many dramatic twists and turns, suitable for children. The film is adapted from the classic story of writer To Hoai - Adventures of a Cricket . While exploring a new land, the brothers De Men and De Trui encountered many difficulties because they could not find a clean water source. They heard rumors about the Swamp Village - a happy world ruled by the great king Ech Com, where insects are provided with shelter, food and drink. Upon arrival, De was warmly welcomed. Both were delighted with the unique architecture of the recycled city.
However, after the dinner party, they were locked in a closed room and became meals for the subjects of Ech Com. After being rescued by Rau Que, De Men learned the truth about the Swamp Village. King Ech Com created a friendly and hospitable image, lured insects to come and then killed them. De Men and De Trui planned a counterattack, helping the small creatures trapped in the village escape.
The crew conveyed the message about environmental pollution through details and images such as: Rivers full of waste, drought, lack of food and clean water for creatures. The crew wished for all species to live in a world of equality and charity. At the end of the film, through the conversation between Cricket and Ladybug, the producer left open the possibility of a sequel.
Director and screenwriter Mai Phuong talked about the reason for not adapting the entire original story as many readers of The Adventures of a Cricket wanted : "The work of writer To Hoai consists of 10 chapters, a journey through many lands, experiencing a series of challenges of the main character and his friends. We cannot convey all of this content in just a 90-minute movie version shown in theaters." According to the crew, The Adventures of a Cricket is like a spin-off, continuing the story of writer To Hoai.
The Adventures of a Cricket is a classic work of literature for Vietnamese children and is taught in schools. To Hoai painted a vivid world of insects with species such as Crickets, Haircutters, Toads, Grasshoppers, and Ants. The main character is the brave, kind, and righteous Cricket, but there are also times when he is arrogant and haughty, causing many consequences. To Hoai wrote the work when he was 17 or 18 years old. The setting of the adventure of Cricket is Nghia Do area along the To Lich River, where the writer spent his childhood playing cricket fighting and cricket casting. The book has been translated into nearly 40 languages.
