The 2025 high school graduation exam sample questions reduce dependence on textbook knowledge, avoiding rote learning; two new multiple-choice test formats prevent random guessing and random learning, according to teachers.
On December 29, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the structure and sample questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam for 17 subjects, of which Math and Literature are two compulsory subjects.
Because the new program is implemented up to grade 11, the illustrative questions mainly use knowledge from grades 10 and 11. The Ministry said that the questions in the questions "try to be associated with meaningful contexts", meaning they have certain effects and values on life and scientific practice.
Regarding Literature - the only subject with an essay test, Mr. Ho Tan Nguyen Minh, head of the Literature group at Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted, Phu Yen , commented that the 2025 sample test still includes the structure of two parts: Reading and Writing, but the weighting has changed from 3-7 to 4-6 points.
The big positive point, according to Mr. Minh, is that the test uses all materials outside of the textbook.
"This helps develop students' independent reading and writing skills, avoiding rote learning and cramming," said Mr. Minh. However, Mr. Minh believes that the way the questions are asked in the sample test is not innovative and does not stimulate students' creativity. A structure of 6 points for Reading Comprehension and 4 points for Writing would be more reasonable.
Mr. Do Duc Anh, a Literature teacher at Bui Thi Xuan High School in Ho Chi Minh City, said that the structure and requirements of the exam closely follow the requirements that need to be achieved according to the genre characteristics of the new program. Using materials other than textbooks also reduces the pressure of exams.
"From now on, the situation of guessing questions will no longer exist," said Mr. Duc Anh.
For example, from the illustration topic, the Reading Comprehension section uses the text "The Victory of Mtao Grư", which is an epic, teachers of the Literature Department, HOCMAI Education System, evaluate the questions mainly at the level of recognition and understanding. The application questions require the ability to read the text and discover "what is most meaningful to life today" but are not challenging, because the problem posed in the work is relatively familiar.
The Writing section includes a literary argument, discussing the character of the Rain God in the excerpt and a social argument, presenting opinions on the difficulties and challenges facing youth. The literary argument is not too difficult, but requires accuracy, so students need to be careful when doing the test, avoiding falling into the situation of paraphrasing the text, rambling discussions. The social argument is also relatively familiar, not new, but to get full marks, students need to have valuable, convincing evidence, clearly expressing the writer's point of view.
"It is not difficult for students to get 7-7.25 with this test," teachers commented.

Regarding Math , Mr. Lam Vu Cong Chinh, Math teacher at Nguyen Du High School, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the sample test is using 10th grade knowledge, so it is not possible to evaluate the volume and content.
In terms of form, the biggest difference is that the 2025 high school graduation exam has two more question types: multiple choice, true or false, and fill in the answer, in addition to the traditional four-choice multiple choice. According to Mr. Chinh, the new question type will overcome the situation where candidates randomly guess and hope for the right answer.
This is also what Mr. Do Bao Chau, Math teacher at FPT Ha Nam Inter-level School, is passionate about.
"After a long time of students taking multiple choice tests, mainly using formulas and features on handheld calculators, the new question format will test their real abilities," said Mr. Chau.
The Ministry of Education and Training also explained that adding the question format is to test students' thinking at a higher level. Therefore, the number of questions in the Math exam has been reduced from 50 to 34 because students need more time to answer.
Teachers at HOCMAI Education System rate the number of recognition and comprehension questions in the illustration test at about 6 points, and the remaining 4 points are application.
"Therefore, universities and colleges can absolutely use the exam results for admission," said a teacher.

2025 is the year when the first batch of students under the new general education program will take their graduation exams. Currently, the high school graduation exam is organized with 6 subjects, including Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Natural Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Social Science (History, Geography, Civic Education).
Thus, the number of exam subjects from 2025 will be reduced by two and the number of exam sessions by one. The Ministry of Education and Training assesses that this plan will help reduce exam pressure for students, reduce costs for their families and society.
Regarding the method of considering and recognizing high school graduation in 2025, the Ministry said that it will combine the results of the assessment process and the results of the graduation exam at an appropriate rate. In addition, the exam will maintain the paper-based exam format until 2030, and after 2030, a pilot computer-based exam with multiple-choice subjects will be conducted in qualified locations.
